Divine Word University DWU Alumni Association Donates to Gerehu General Hospital

Media Release 03012024

The Divine Word University Alumni Association through the Port Moresby Chapter, fulfilled the donation drive towards the
Gerehu Hospital in Port Moresby on Friday the 22nd of December 2023.

After three weeks of the donation drive, many came along to donate much-needed items to the Gerehu General Hospital.

Executives and a handful of Divine Word University Alumni met with hospital staff at Gerehu to hand over the association's donations.

The DWUAA was given a tour of the hospital facilities, despite being the second largest hospital in the nation's capital and catering for many patients, the hospital lacked basics for patient care.

We all know the struggles of our Government-run Hospitals across the country, some of the processes in place make it difficult to get even the most basic office and patient care needs for staff and people that access the facility.

The Association managed to get the basics including Toiletries, office stationary, desk fans, and kits for testing for Dengue, Typhoid, and HIV, these were among other items that were requested.

The DWU Alumni were given a tour of the Hospital and saw firsthand where their donations will be put to use, it wasn't all that pleasant of a tour, but the team saw firsthand the immediate need the Hospital has.

Speaking on behalf of the Alumni was DWU Alumnus Garry Yaguro, he said, he was touched by the passion that the Staff had for their job, despite their many hardships, they continue to do the work and serve the people of this nation.

"It was eye-opening for us and really emotional for us to see the circumstances, the situations, and the challenges that you go through each day, to help our people, it's a really tough and challenging work you guys do.

"You have the heart and passion to do the job, and we appreciate your efforts," Mr Yaguro said.

Garry pointed out that this was the start of a partnership going forward, and the DWUAA will continue to help in whatever way they can.

The Hospital staff is made up of DWU Alumni from the Health Science faculty and it was fitting that the DWUAA POM Chapter vice President, a staff of the Hospital Michael Yama, was pivotal in laying the groundwork for the donation drive, he and his colleagues were grateful to see fellow Alumni take the initiative to donate to the hospital.

"We have many DWU ALumni that work here in the Hospital, we had a meeting with the Association executives and I suggested that we donate to the Hospital, I had to go through those in charge in each of the sections of the Hospital and we managed to record all their needs, I am glad we got most of the things that they requested," Yama said

Doctor Esther Gabut Director of Medical Services NCDPHA Gerehu Hospital welcomed the team and the heartfelt gesture.

She was thankful that organizations find time to give back to the Hospital, the staff were also joyous as most of the things they requested were delivered to them.

"I Welcome you to Gerehu Hospital, It's your Hospital your staff work here, we are the second largest Public Hospital in NCD and we have challenges, we are grateful for Organisations like yours that help provide the resources, that make patient care possible.

"What you have given today I assure you will go a long way to provide quality patient care, I thank the DWUAA executives and all involved for making this possible," Dr. Esther Gabut said
