As World Immunisation Week wraps up, the Santos Foundation recognises the critical role vaccines play in protecting lives and ensuring every child has a healthy start.
In Kikori District, Gulf Province, a community-led immunisation pilot is helping more children receive vaccines on time. Health workers, volunteers and families are working together to identify missed cases and support mothers to immunise newborns early. As a result, dropout rates have fallen from 19.1% in 2024 to just -0.2% in 2025, meaning more children are now fully vaccinated, with some communities exceeding coverage targets.
This work is supported through the Accelerated Immunisation and Health Systems Strengthening (AIHSS) initiative, a partnership between the Governments of Papua New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand, and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, with support from the Santos Foundation. Through this partnership, the Foundation is helping strengthen health services and outreach so more children can access life-saving vaccines.
Beyond Gulf, the Santos Foundation also supports the Hela Provincial Health Authority and the Southern Highlands Provincial Health Authority through hard-to-reach patrols, ensuring vaccinations reach remote communities. To date, more than 2 million vaccinations have been delivered, helping protect children and building healthier communities across Gulf, Hela and Southern Highlands provinces.

Santos Awards Honours Locally Led Cervical Cancer Program in PNG
A locally led cervical cancer program has been named Santos Foundation Program of the Year at the 2026 Santos Ltd Directors’ Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability Awards.
Since opening in 2024, more than 6,000 women have been screened for the Human Papilloma Virus. Of those who tested positive, 92 per cent received same day treatment delivered by locally trained nurses, bringing lifesaving prevention and care closer to communities.
Led by the Southern Highlands Provincial Health Authority with clinic set‑up support from the Western Highlands Provincial Health Authority and backed by Santos Foundation through technical expertise from the Kirby Institute at the University of New South Wales, the program established Papua New Guinea’s first cervical cancer screening and treatment clinic at Mendi General Hospital.
We also congratulate Wayne Kasou, Senior Vice President PNG Stakeholder Management, recognised as CEO Values Leader of the Year for his leadership and commitment to genuine partnership with landowners and communities.

Strengthening Community‑Led Development in Lake Kutubu

“Dugi Mena” means facilitator in the Fasu language of the Kutubu people from Papua New Guinea’s Southern Highlands Province, reflecting the important role local leaders play in guiding development decisions within their communities.

Through the Dugi Mena Community Development Worker training, Santos Foundation is supporting youth and women in the Lake Kutubu area to build leadership capability and strengthen community‑led planning that responds to local priorities.

Earlier this year, 35 participants from 18 wards across Kutubu Local –level Government completed training aligned with the PNG Community Development Worker National Standard, with a strong focus on practical, inclusive planning skills.

While the long-term outcomes of the training will continue to emerge over time, participants are already beginning to put their learning into action.

Haotex Kurau, has facilitated two ward and project planning sessions since completing the course.

“Our community has good ideas, but we needed better ways to plan and work together,” Haotex said. “This training helped me bring people together, so our voices are heard.”

Participants will continue to receive mentoring and work towards national accreditation. Their progress in the coming months will help demonstrate how strengthened local leadership and planning skills can support communities to set priorities and drive their own development towards thriving communities.
