A Condolence Message to the 27 lives lost at sea on the 18th of July, 2026. What a sad and unbearable situation for the immediate family members, relatives and friends 🥺

Sometimes we celebrate and other times we mourn to honor and respect our past and those who left us. Unity is what brings us together.

On behalf of the UPNG New Ireland Students Association, we share our heartfelt grievances with the UPNG East New Britain Students Association.
Thank you for hosting such an event that brings together everyone including those not from the affected province.

We hope and pray that our good lord will bless and comfort those who are still mourning and hoping to see their loved ones after the tragic incident.
May he help those in search and may he provide the bodies of those yet to be found.

May their souls Rest in Eternal Peace 🥺 🙏

The lord gives and takes. We are just under his guidance, care and protection.

Culture at risk: Call to preserve tradition at New Ireland Day

On the 18th of July this month, the Director for
Economic Sector, NIPG, Mr Edward Lasisi give a strong plea calling for the formal documentation and active preservation of New Ireland’s rich cultural heritage.

The University of Papua New Guinea New Ireland Students Association (UPNG NISA) host the New Ireland Day at the National Museum and Art Gallery in Port Moresby on the date, as part of their major fundraising drive.

The celebration showcased traditional performances while stalls were set up to raise funds for UPNG NISA's upcoming end of year projects back in New Ireland Province.

Addressing students, young people, and leaders gathered to dance, sing, and feast, Mr Lasisi reminded the audience that a "tree without roots will fall" and "people without culture will lose." He raised concerns over the rapid erosion of indigenous customs, traditions, and native languages.

"We are losing our tradition, we are losing our cultures, we are losing our languages," Mr Lasisi said.

He urged parents, community leaders, and youth to stand proud and draw inspiration from their heritage to develop authentic local products and secure the fabric of society. Stating that modern shifts threaten traditional identity, he called for an immediate, formal effort to document customs before they are lost entirely.
