Wewak, East Sepik Province - December 2025: The East Sepik Provincial Administration (ESPA) has taken an important step to support and empower young people in the province by hosting the National Youth Engagement Strategy (NYES) 2025 - 2029 Socialization Workshop and signing a Joint Action Plan with the National Youth Development Authority (NYDA).

The two-day workshop was held on Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 December 2025 at the Boutique Hotel in Wewak. It brought together representatives from the provincial government, districts, local-level governments, community groups and partner organisations from across East Sepik Province.

The workshop allowed participants to learn more about the National Youth Engagement Strategy and discuss how it can work in East Sepik. Discussions focused on key issues affecting young people, including law and order, social unity, skills development and creating opportunities for young people to take part in the economy.

The program ended today with a formal signing ceremony, where the East Sepik Deputy Provincial Administrator Mr. Immanuel W ToMarum and the Director of Programs and Extension NYDA, Mr. Carl Gekoban signed a Joint Action Plan on behalf of the Provincial Administrator Mr. Samson Torovi and the Director-General of NYDA Mr. Joe Itaki. This agreement confirms a shared commitment to work together to improve youth programs and services in the province.

Speaking through the memorandum issued by the Office of the Deputy Provincial Administrator – Social Services Sector, the Provincial Administration emphasized that youth engagement remains central to advancing sustainable development outcomes in East Sepik Province. Through this action plan, both parties agreed to better coordinate youth activities and begin the process of setting up the East Sepik Provincial Youth Development Authority, as well as supporting youth structures at the district level.

As one of the final major government engagements for 2025, the workshop and signing reflect a strong commitment to continue working together in 2026 to create better opportunities and a brighter future for the young people of East Sepik Province.

Morobe Rugby Union competition based in Lae City and Capital Rugby union Competition based in Port Moresby City.

Both Competition are currently the heat beat of Rugby union in Papua New Guinea. There is not so much Rugby union participation in others parts of the country, apart from Lae and Port Moresby.

Rugby union sporting code is having a difficult time.

I strongly want to make appeal to Capital Rugby and Morobe Rugby to transform the Competition into a Semi- Professional competition.

Let's look at Capital Rugby competition in Port Moresby. There are are several division:

1.Under 20 women's.
2. senior women's.
3.under 20 men division
4.Under 23 men division
5. A grade division
6. Primier division

The rest of the division can remain and for the Primier senior men division and Senior women it should transform into a Semi-Professional division just like the Digicel cup competition.

For some background information, NRL competition was once known as the Sydney City competition before it transform into a National Rugby league competition in Australia. Capital Rugby and Morobe Rugby competitions can do the same too. For it will massively contribute to the growth of Rugby union in the two largest cities in the country.

Digicel cup is a National Rugby league competition at a Semi professional level, However Capital Rugby and Morobe Rugby both can be a City competition at a Semi professional level too.

All in all, I believe it's time for Rugby union in Papua New Guinea to start to grow and transform let's not depend so much on PNGRFU.

It's about time to have the two cities to have the biggest Rugby union Competition in the country.

East Sepik has 7 seats in Parliament to represent each electorate and the Province. We have Yangoru-Saussia, Wewak, Wosera- Gawi, Ambunti-Drekikire, Maprik and Angoram seats and also East Sepik Governor Seats.

Now Frieda Mine is a Global and national issue.

Out of all the seats for East Sepik , most of the members of Parliament representing East Sepik and it's electorate, are originally from the Sepik River, let's identify them.

1. Member of Wosera-Gawi is from Avatip village in Ambunti.
2. Member of Wewak is from Kamanimbit village in Angoram.
3. Member of Ambunti Drekikire is from May-river, Ambunti area.
4. Member of Angoram is from Savanaut and Korogu village in Gawi and part Wewak district.

Those Members are from the Sepik River, have the majority to use their power to stand against Frieda mine. However most likely that's not the case, few has approve the Frieda Mine.

Let's protect the Sepik River.
