The Adventist Development and Relief Agency Papua New Guinea (ADRA PNG) has signed a one-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Menyamya District Development Authority (DDDA) to strengthen Social Accountability (SA) and improve Literacy and Health service delivery in one of Morobe Province’s most remote districts.

The MoU signing was attended by Hon. Solen Loifa, MP for Menyamya and Minister for Mining, Local-level Government representatives, Australian Consulate-General, Lae, the Australian High Commission, Morobe Mission, DFAT/BCEP, DfCDR, the Adult Literacy Coordinating Body, Morobe Literacy Committee and Organizations for Persons with Disability (OPD).
This partnership strengthens coordination between government, faith-based institutions, communities and ensures community voices shape local services and priorities.

ADRA PNG recently concluded the assignment of Samuel Wassmann, who served as a Design, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (DMEL) Mentor under the Australian Volunteers Program. Sam supported the Programs Department by working alongside staff to strengthen existing MEL systems through training, mentoring, and the introduction of practical tools. He also contributed to the development of an online reporting system that is helping improve efficiency and ease workload for teams.

His time with ADRA PNG helped reinforce the importance of MEL as not just a reporting function, but a tool to support learning, decision-making, and program improvement. Sam worked closely with teams, adapting well to the local context while also gaining a deeper understanding of how ADRA PNG operates.

Beyond the technical work, Sam built positive relationships across the organisation. He was respectful of culture and engaged well with staff and communities, which supported the uptake of his work. ADRA PNG acknowledges the support of the Australian Volunteers Program and thanks Sam for his contribution and the shared learning during his time with the team.

TC Maila Response in East New Britain

Through the Church Partnership Program (CPP) under BCEP, with funding from Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, ADRA PNG supported response efforts in East New Britain, with the New Britain New Ireland SDA Mission pastors and church workers taking the lead on the ground. Who are also working closely with the Provincial Disaster Committee (PDC) and provincial authorities to support the response. Relief reached Karavia Village (Zone 2 & 3) and Lamaraim, providing much needed food, clothing and household items based on community needs assessments.

Many families shared their struggles, with some in tears as they had not yet received assistance. Others shared testimonies of how they saw God’s provision through the support received. ADRA acknowledges the national coordinating body that continues to guide the overall response, aligning plans and partners to support communities affected by TC Maila PNG.

🚨 ADRA responds to cyclones in the South Pacific

ADRA teams in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Fiji are responding in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclones Maila and Vainau. You can support ADRA's response at adra.org.au/disaster

The cyclones have caused flooding, landslides, and major infrastructure damage, with TC Maila claiming 25 lives in Papua New Guinea.

ADRA in each country has activated their National Emergency Management Plan to respond to the most urgent needs. Food has been identified as one of the most urgent needs, with emergency food packs being distributed across all three countries.

“There will be a need for food as food gardens are washed out by the heavy rain, with fruit trees blown down by the strong wind," says Raynick Jack, ADRA Emergency National Coordinator, Solomon Islands. "We are expecting food shortages soon as small canteens and nearby stores will have many people buying food for their family."

ADRA Solomon Islands is also distributing hygiene items including soap and sanitary products.

On 26 March 2026 in Bialla, members of the Lasobe and Sovula Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) Groups gathered at Apupul Governing Church to celebrate their graduation under the ADRA PNG SHAPE Program. The VSLA model brings community members together to save regularly, learn basic financial skills and support one another through shared resources. What began as small weekly savings gradually grew into something more.

Participants, mostly women, are now more confident in managing their household finances. They are planning ahead, making informed decisions and relying on their group as a source of support during times of need. Along the way, trust has strengthened, relationships have deepened and a stronger sense of community has taken root. Families are beginning to feel the difference.
