Connecting, Collaborating, and Growing PNG Women in Construction at Day 2 of the 41st Australia PNG Business Council Forum

Day 2 of the 41st Australia Papua New Guinea Business Council Forum was both meaningful and energising for PNG Women in Construction (PNGWIC) as we continued strengthening our visibility and building connections across the construction, infrastructure, and business sectors.

The program featured insightful contributions from Mr. Vaughan Mills, President of the Australia Papua New Guinea Business Council, and Hon. Allan Bird, Governor of East Sepik Province. Key sessions followed, including a dynamic panel on sport‑driven economic growth with Ms. Lorna McPherson (PNG Chiefs Rugby League), as well as an Infrastructure and Investment Perspective from Mr. George Constantinou (Constantinou Group) and Mr. Rio Fiocco (Port Moresby Chamber of Commerce & Industry), who highlighted the role of local businesses in driving investment.

The afternoon spotlighted major national projects, with presentations from Mr. Stephen Quantrill (Chairman of the Board and CEO Twinza Oil Limited– PASCA. A), Mr. Gerea Aopi CBE (Kumul Petroleum – Oil & Gas Outlook), and Mr. Andrew Morris (Pacific Marine Group) who shared a milestone achievement whereby 30% of their PNG workforce are women, a powerful alignment with our mission to elevate women across the sector.

Throughout the day, PNGWIC engaged in valuable discussions with a wide range of businesses and corporates. We are grateful for the strong interest shown in partnering with us to expand opportunities for women in construction.

A big shout out and a word of thanks to everyone who visited our booth. PNGWIC will be present again on Friday, 15 May, and we warmly welcome anyone who has not yet stopped by to come meet us and explore how we can collaborate to empower women across PNG’s construction and infrastructure sectors.

Day 1 at the 41st PNG–Australia Business Forum set a powerful tone for the Papua New Guinea Women in Construction (PNGWIC) team.

We began with arrivals and booth setup before diving into an energising networking session that brought together leaders, partners, and delegates from across the region.

The forum was officially opened by Kina Bank General Manager – Treasury Sales, Mr. Simon Kepui, who welcomed all delegates. The ribbon‑cutting ceremony was then carried out by IPA Deputy Board Chairman Mr. Phil Franklin and Trade and Investment Commissioner Esther Sun, marking the formal start of the event.

One of Mr. Kepui’s key messages encouraged participants to connect with new business partners and build relationships that support long‑term economic growth.

PNG Women in Construction is proud to stand as a representative for women in the industry ensuring our voices, skills, and contributions are visible in the spaces shaping PNG’s economic future. We continue to advocate for women, including women living with disabilities, to access, enter, and thrive in the construction sector.

If you’re attending the forum, visit our booth and meet with one of our PNGWIC executives Ms Loretta Tunim to connect with us, learn about our programs, and explore opportunities for collaboration to strengthen women’s participation in the industry.

The PNG Women in Construction Advisory Board convened its first quarterly meeting for 2026. Board members reviewed and endorsed the 2026 Annual Business Plan and budget, and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting and guiding the association’s governance as it advances its objectives for the year.

The Advisory Board is now progressing towards holding an AGM to formalise the PNGWIC Board for 2027. Nominations for new Board members and the election process will be conducted at PNGWIC’s first Annual General Meeting (AGM), scheduled for mid-2026.

We invite all eligible PNGWIC members to participate in the AGM and, if interested, nominate for a Board position. If you would like to support this growing association, please contact us via email at [email protected].

Please note that only financial members are eligible to participate in the upcoming AGM and Board elections.

"In 2026, I will not shrink to fit outdated systems. I will build skills, confidence, and community. I will take up space - with excellence and integrity. I will belong in construction - and I am here to lead."
This was the commitment statement made by PNGWIC members in our first Lunch and Learn session for the year. Led by Dr. Mirzi Betasolo (Head of the School of Civil Engineering, Unitech), we gathered around a powerful conversation on goal setting for women in construction.

We discussed confidence, building structure instead of burnout, redefining success and sisterhood as strategy through a 'mentor one woman, sponsor one woman, recommend one woman' approach.

That's how we build an industry that works for all of us.
