Lissenung Island Turtle Conservation

Lissenung Island Turtle Conservation During the turtle nesting season, we save turtle eggs from being eaten by poachers. Once hatched, they are released into the ocean.

Lissenung Island Turtle Conservation (LITC) works with local communities to preserve critically endangered Hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata). We protect eggs from poachers by relocating them to nesting boxes on Lissenung Island, where they are incubated for approx. 60 days until they hatch. Weak, injured or underdeveloped hatchlings go into our head start tank, where sea turtle husban

dry is applied until they are strong and healthy enough to be released. Less frequently, we attend to injured juvenile or adult sea turtles. The most common issues we see are flipper injuries or loss, or being raised in captivity, which often leads to malnourishment. Community and school education programs are being conducted, but currently on a limited basis due to lack of funding. We would love to expand this part of our turtle conservation so future generations understand the impact current poaching of turtles and their eggs are having on the marine environment.
