Incredible Teamwork!👏🙌💙🐾

640 animals. Two volunteer teams. One incredible partnership. 🐾

When Vets Beyond Borders launched its first-ever volunteer deployment to Papua New Guinea earlier this year, we hoped it would make a difference.

Thanks to the dedication of our volunteer veterinarians and veterinary nurses, the outstanding team at RSPCA of PNG, and the support of local communities, the results exceeded all expectations.

Across two deployments, 640 dogs and cats were desexed—helping to prevent thousands of unwanted litters and improving the health and welfare of animals across Port Moresby.

These numbers represent more than surgeries. They represent animals receiving care, communities gaining access to veterinary services, local veterinary capacity being strengthened, and a shared commitment to creating lasting change.

To our volunteers who embraced a brand-new destination with enthusiasm, compassion and professionalism, and to the incredible team at RSPCA PNG who welcomed them so warmly and worked tirelessly to make the program a success—thank you.

This is just the beginning of what promises to be a wonderful partnership, and we can't wait to see what we can achieve together next. ❤️

Did you know???
Leaving a dog in a parked car is incredibly dangerous. Vehicles act like mobile ovens—temperatures can rise nearly 11'C in just 10 minutes. Even on mild days or in the shade, dogs can quickly suffer fatal heatstroke, dehydration, or organ failure.
On 22'C day, a car's interior can reach 47'C within an hour.
The cooling struggle: Unlike humans, dogs rely almost entirely on panting to cool down. When the air they breathe is too hot, this mechanism fails, triggering rapid organ distress.
Windows and shade don't help: Parking in the shade or cracking the windows makes little to no difference in preventing dangerous internal temperatures.

June is External Parasite Awareness Month.
Your pet has the honour of being a host to various ectoparasites, all of which are capable of causing skin problems. While these skin problems may be associated with itching and inflammation that are both uncomfortable and inconvenient for your pet, external parasites can also lead to more serious system health issues for your pet. For this reason, it is important to understand the different types of external parasites that can affect your pet, and the diseases they can cause.

External parasites or ectoparasites are small organisms that live on or in your pet’s skin. Ectoparasites live and feed on the blood or skin cells of their host. There are four main types of external parasites: fleas, ticks, mites and lice. In Papua New Guinea, external parasites are a year-round problem, and almost all pets will be affected by fleas, ticks, lice or mites at some point in time of their lives. Therefore, it is important to be able to identify symptoms that may indicate your pet has ectoparasites and understand the principles of treatment and prevention.
