Cheers to PNG 50th Independence Anniversary! 🎉

Last Friday, Kup Women for Peace and Highlands Women Human Rights Defenders Movement had a combined pre-independence celebration to commemorate PNG' s 50th Independence. Staff families, friends, and local communities joined in the celebration with the theme "Celebrating our contributions of local solutions to Women, Peace and Security in PNG."

The program commenced with the National Anthem and flag-raising ceremony and ended with a cake cutting and food to commemorate this important occasion.

The gathering also allowed guests and staff to share their personal and professional experiences on the past, present, and what the future holds for our beautiful nation. Everyone left with the challenge of how we as citizens can make PNG a better place and lead a productive and meaningful life contributing to the Government’s bigger vision 2050.

We are proud to witness the graduation of Solo Yokopao, who is among 12 male facilitators and 40 participants who graduated today from "The Community Curriculum Addressing Sorcery Accusation Related Violence (SARV)" in Enga province today.

Solo is a dedicated Human Rights Defender and vocal point to Highlands Women Human Rights Defenders Movement in Enga, among a few dedicated HRDs working to prevent and address SARV in the province. It is very uplifting to learn that Solo now has a trained team of changed and motivated community, and church leaders dedicated to spearhead change in Enga province.

We congratulate Solo on his achievement and wish him continued strength and perseverance in this fight to end SARV in the Highlands and in PNG.

This initiative is funded by KOICA through UNFPA and supported by the Divine Word University and Melanesian Institute. Being a pilot training in Wapenamanda, we are amazed by the outcomes of this training and look forward to future collaborations.
