The Sololo community in Milne Bay Province has signed its forest agreement with Cool Earth for the eighth consecutive year. A total of 94 people were present to sign the agreement. The signing took place on 30th of April 2026 in Sololo village.
The aim of this Forest Conservation Agreement Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is to develop projects which help local people reduce deforestation and therefore reduce the global impact of climate change. 🌳🌿
After the signing, the community will receive annual funding of approximately K66,000.
Sololo has been in partnership with Cool Earth since 2018.
As part of the agreement, the community pledged not to sell their forest resources to logging, mining, or oil palm companies.πŸ‘

Biodiversity students at Wabumari partnership community. 🌿🌳🌱 The biodiversity students play an important role in supporting conservation work in the community. They carry out field surveys, collect and document plant and animal specimens, and monitor forest health to track changes in the environment. They also help identify species, prepare specimens for lab processing, and record vital data for ongoing conservation projects. Their efforts contribute greatly to protecting our forests and strengthening local conservation knowledge. πŸ˜€

In the heart of Papua New Guinea’s rainforest, the women of Kondu in Milne Bay Province have always been strong mothers, farmers, caretakers, and guardians of the land. But behind their strength are quiet challenges that often go unseen. One of these is access to safe, sustainable menstrual care.
Recently, something simple yet powerful changed that story.
Through a partnership between and , women in Kondu received eco-friendly reusable sanitary pads, a small package with an enormous impact.🌳🌱🌿

A three-day community governance training was held from 14–16 October 2025 at Kondu, with a total of 22 participants in attendance.
The training was identified as a need by the communities and is part of Cool Earth’s ongoing efforts to strengthen community-based organisations (CBOs). Previous trainings were conducted in Wabumari and Sololo, making Kondu the third community to receive this capacity-building support.

This is how people from our partner communities (Kondu) transport materials to their villages. After 3-5 hours by vehicle, they again carry the materials (roofing irons and cement bags) and walk for hours on foot through bush tracks, crossing rivers, and climbing over mountains to reach the community. 😌

Biodiversity students from Wabumari are now using our newly established Rainforest Lab, set up just last year. The lab gives them a hands-on space to learn how science and technology can work together to protect nature.πŸ€πŸ‡πŸŽ‹

During recent trainings, students used the Survey123 app to collect data from the forest. With this tool, they can map trees, record wildlife sightings, and monitor forest health directly from their phones. The app makes it easier to store and share accurate information.🌱

The rainforest lab is more than just a space it’s a bridge between local knowledge and modern science. πŸŒΏπŸ™ŒπŸŒ³
