A nighttime encounter with the Tiger Cowrie 🐚

This beautiful spotted shell belongs to 𝘊𝘺𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘦𝘢 𝘵𝘪𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘴, an iconic cowrie found on reefs throughout the Indo-Pacific.

And beneath this shell is a very much alive animal! Its mantle, visible here around the shell, plays several essential roles: it contributes to the formation and maintenance of the shell, helps with respiration, and bears numerous small papillae that may help with camouflage and sensing its surroundings. When threatened, the cowrie can quickly retract its mantle back inside its shell.

The Tiger Cowrie is highly sought after for its beautiful shell. In several regions, overcollection and reef degradation have significantly reduced its populations.
So, if you’re lucky enough to come across a live one: observe it, photograph it… and leave it right where you found it. 🪸

✨MEET THE TEAM✨

Ia ora na! I’m Gabrielle, a marine biologist.
Over the years, I’ve had the chance to work in different parts of the world, from the Caribbean to Wallis and Futuna, before discovering the incredible waters of French Polynesia. Each place has its own unique environment, but my fascination with what lies beneath the surface has always been the same.
For the past two years, I’ve been lucky enough to call Bora Bora home and share this passion through my work with Sea Narea.

What I love most about my job is sharing and educating. Making science easy to understand, sparking curiosity, and helping people connect with the ocean. Whether I’m talking with passionate ocean lovers, families visiting the island, or children seeing the ocean through new eyes for the very first time, every interaction is a chance to help people better understand and appreciate this incredible underwater world.

With Sea Narea, we also want to help you experience the lagoon from a different perspective, to share what we see and learn in the field, introduce you to our research projects, and show how coral restoration can play a role in helping protect these fragile ecosystems. Ultimately, it’s about understanding the reefs better so we can help give them a better chance for the future.

I hope to see you underwater soon!🪸

The imperial nudibranch (Hypselodoris imperialis) is a small marine mollusk that is shell-less as an adult. Its white body, covered in yellow and black spots, is a distinctive visual signature and also a warning signal to predators.
On its head, its rhinophores allow it to detect molecules in the water and “smell” its surroundings. At the rear, its feathery gills are responsible for gas exchange.

As seen in this photo, they are often encountered in pairs. Since this species is hermaphroditic, each individual can function as both male and female, but they still need another individual to reproduce.

Among the coral branches, life finds a home.

Every reef provides shelter and habitat for countless marine species (here a little whitetail dascyllus)—each playing its part in the ocean’s delicate balance.

In total darkness, a halo of light reveals an almost unreal silhouette: this long filament undulating like a thread of silk belongs to a juvenile Zanclus cornutus, the Moorish idol.

This oversized dorsal fin, extending far beyond the body, is one of the fish’s most recognizable signatures — a true « banner » floating through the water column. Unlike the adult, which is more territorial and often found in pairs, the juvenile prefers to stay close to the bottom, sheltered, watching its surroundings with that round, curious eye.

✨MEET THE TEAM ✨

« Ia ora na ! I am Paul, a marine biologist and underwater photographer. After gaining my first professional experience around the reefs of Wallis and Futuna, I’ve been working in Bora Bora with Sea Narea for the past two years. Today, as we take the reins of the Sea Narea adventure, our goal is simple: to rebuild that essential connection with the ocean and inspire everyone to reconnect with the marine world. Through unique activities, engaging talks, and reef monitoring projects, we’ll take you on a journey of discovery through the Bora Bora lagoon. While you’re getting your fins ready, we’ll share some of our progress on this adventure as well as our playful encounters with the lagoon’s cheerful cast of finned characters.

Sunday’s portrait✨

Pterois antennata — the spotfin lionfish

The spotfin lionfish gets its name from the long, fleshy tentacles above its eyes. Their exact function isn’t fully understood, but they’re thought to help break up the fish’s outline, aiding camouflage among coral and rocky crevices.
By day, it often stays motionless in reef crevices, almost invisible. It’s at night that it truly comes into its own: its pectoral fins spread out like a fan to corner small fish and shrimp, before launching a lightning-fast suction attack.
Those white rays radiating around it aren’t just for show—they’re venomous dorsal spines, a formidable defense against predators (and something to respect from a safe distance while diving..!)

Protecting coral reefs is something you can learn from a very young age. Raising awareness among young people gives them the tools to understand, love, and protect these incredible ecosystems !
And what better way to learn than by getting in the water ? Through coral cutting, they become active participants in reef restoration 🪸

🇬🇧Sunday’s portrait : The Sand Lizardfish

Synodus dermatogenys, or the sand lizardfish, is a small predator (max 9.5 inch) that’s as stealthy as it is impressive. It spends much of its time resting on the seafloor, perfectly camouflaged on the sand and coral debris… until prey comes within range of its large mouth!
Photographed at night, this one treated us to a rather spectacular face-to-face encounter. A dragon-like head, eyes that glow in the dark, and endless patience…
