This gray whale died inside the breeding lagoons, while other individuals continued using the same habitat. During the 2025 season, 158 gray whales have been found dead across Baja California and along their migration route.
Over the last decade, the population has declined to roughly half of its former size, with researchers documenting low reproductive rates, malnutrition, and shifts in feeding behavior. The most likely drivers originate far from these lagoons, in the Arctic feeding grounds, where climate change, reduced sea-ice coverage, and lower prey availability are altering ecosystem conditions. In this footage, the exact cause of death cannot be determined, but the broader pattern is increasingly clear.
