This week a precious 4 year old girl died on the Purus. The child had been sick with some sort of bronchial issue. Instead of taking her to the medical clinic, her parents first took her to the witch doctor. At the last minute when all the tricks hadn’t worked, they brought her to the medical clinic. There was no power in town that night to get her on oxygen immediately and it took nearly and hour to reestablish power to the clinic and start treatment. She died within the next hour.

This isn’t the first time this has happened. We’ve had parents bring us their children who we pray for and give medicine. Only to later hear they’ve decided to go with the witch doctor’s advice. And the child die.

These children are at the mercy of their parents and their parents live in darkness. Change here in the jungle is generational. It’s slow and it’s heartbreaking. People resist and don’t trust change, including medical care and the gospel. But we know that the gospel DOES CHANGE LIVES!

Please join us in praying for these children. Pray for their parents, pray for their little hearts, pray that the gospel changes them! They don’t have to live in the darkness, but can be brought into glorious light!

Every Saturday morning I (Jadison) walk around town and buy groceries for the week. I usually start by looking for meat and then make a menu based on what’s available. Because the airstrip has been closed (keeping us from getting usual supplies from Pucallpa) and the river is low (keeping big barges of supplies from coming in from Brazil) food, in particular meat and veggies have been scarce.

Our first Saturday here, I set out to buy groceries only to find there was no meat or vegetables available anywhere in town. I bought what I could find and figured that we would survive and go fish in the river if need be! Also, we bring in lots of refrigerated foods, dry good and shelf stable items from US (peanut butter, grits, etc…) and from Pucallpa (beans, Mac n Cheese, bacon and cheese). BUT, by the end of the day, I had a freezer full of meat and sufficient vegetables for our meals! The Lord provided!

This Saturday, I started hearing again, there was no beef, no chicken, no eggs, no potatoes, no tomatoes…. My mind immediately went to stressing about what we would do about food and for how long. Then I went searching and came back with this bountiful haul! How quick I was to forget His faithfulness! The Lord is good, and gracious and kind. He loves to remind me through the little things, like apples and potatoes!

If you made it to the end of this post, will you pray for our health and safety for the next several weeks. They are opening the air strip every 15 days to bring in supplies, but the float plane from SAMAir is currently not in operation because the water in their lake is too low. If we have an emergency and need to get out, we would have to travel a day (at least) upriver by boat and then wait until the next day for a plane to meet us. Then possibly another day to get to Lima, depending on the issue. Again, I have to believe that He sees us and will take care of us because He has been so faithful again and again!

We sometimes get used to seeing the faces, the lostness, and just how different the lifestyle is out here. We even have to remind ourselves to take pictures because this is our “normal”. It’s easy to grow accustomed and sometimes even frustrated with the people around us. Today was not one of those days, I was reminded how different this place is and how heartbreakingly lost these people are. That paired with the fact that God has placed us here to share the hope we have in Jesus Christ with these people is a heavy responsibility.

“For this reason, I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory.”

The boys and I have been studying this passage this week. I pray God gives me and our family the same kind of resolve and ambition as the Apostle Paul!

This is the current scene in Pucallpa as we enter day 3 of strikes. People are setting up blockades about every kilometer along the main highway to protest rising gas prices. The blockades keep people from passing unless you are on foot. They burn old tires in the streets and slash tires of vehicles trying to pass. As this continues, they are also vandalizing anyone or store trying to sell food or go on with “business as normal”.

That being said, please pray for a peaceful compromise for the people of Pucallpa. There is basically very little to no gas in the city and it’s very hard for people who literally live day to day to get food.

We are safe on a private dirt road just next to SAM Air. We received news yesterday that the airstrip was opening just for this weekend 🙌. So we’ll be flying in together on Friday. We were not able to get all the supplies we hoped for but none of it is mandatory. Thankfully, we were able to pay someone to walk a generator through the strike lines. This will help us as we will likely be without power a good bit as the airstrip is being fixed.

The Lord has taken care of so many of our prayers. I’m reminded daily of how He cares and provides for each of us. We are so thankful for His many blessings to our family even in the midst of chaos around us!

We are enjoying our time back in the states. We are usually busy with doctor and dentist visits, preaching at churches, teaching on missions, meeting with supporters and of course spending time with family and friends!
