Awamaki

Awamaki Awamaki is a community-driven social enterprise working in deep collaboration with Quechua artisans.

Together we create grassroots programs to support and grow women-led cooperatives through heritage textiles, market access, and sustainable tourism. Awamaki works to empower women in the Sacred Valley region through our Women’s Artisanal Cooperatives and Sustainable Tourism Programs. Additionally, our Volunteer Program brings international volunteers with various skill sets to support our work. Th

e Women's Artisanal Cooperatives Program provides skills education to women's cooperatives in product design, product quality, and business leadership. The program also connects them to local and global fair trade market access for their crafts, including through our Awamaki Fair Trade Store located in Ollantaytambo. Awamaki's Sustainable Tourism program trains rural and indigenous women to host visitors, sell their hand-woven products, teach Spanish and Quechua, and lead Peruvian cooking classes. Our tourism program connects the women we work with to markets in the local tourism economy. If you are only in town for the day, you can visit our Awamaki Fair Trade Store to learn more about our programs and purchase knit and woven textiles at fair prices - supporting our women weavers in the process! In providing access to these opportunities, Awamaki works to empower our amazing women to earn reliable incomes, lift their families out of poverty, and transform their communities.

Today, we honor the mothers, matriarchs, and mentors in the Sacred Valley and across our global community.

We celebrate the women who nurture families, strengthen communities, and carry culture and tradition forward with care and resilience each day.

As we honor them, we invite you to share a moment of gratitude. Tag a mama you are holding close and tell her what you appreciate about her. ♥️

The future of responsible trade is…

• Artisan-led and rooted in community
• Honoring heritage through partnership and shared design
• Cultural integrity in every step
• Access to training, tools, and opportunity
• Women growing their own businesses

At Awamaki, we believe responsible trade is built through long-term partnership, co-creation, and reciprocity. We work alongside Quechua women artisans in the Andes to create opportunities that honor both craft and community.

This World Fair Trade Day, we’re celebrating the women, traditions, and relationships shaping a more equitable future for global trade. 🌎

For Awamaki, Earth Day is deeply connected to our work with the women we partner with—protectors of their land, where food, livelihood, home, and belonging are rooted. 🌿

Today, we honor one of their ancestral practices: natural dyeing.
A living knowledge that sustains communities and cares for the earth.
