A complete blood count (CBC) is a common blood test used to assess the health of an individual. Several measurements related to red blood cells are reported including:
▪️hemoglobin (Hgb),
▪️hematocrit (HCT),
▪️mean corpuscular volume (MCV), and
▪️mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH)
CBC results for people with Down syndrome often indicate a high MCV. This is called macrocytosis and means the person's red blood cells are larger than normal. Additional testing may not be needed unless the results indicate the person with Down syndrome has anemia or other health issues. See the article linked below to learn more.
