The Andean Alliance for Sustainable Development We are not your typical non-profit organization. We believe that communities are more capable of eliminating their poverty than any development expert.

Rural campesino communities in the Sacred Valley of Peru often rely on agriculture as a livelihood. This can be a challenge for the populations who live high in the Andes Mountains, where climate and altitude prevent the cultivation of diverse, nutrient-rich crops, and isolated locations and historical social marginalization impede market access and governmental support. The AASD uses a highly participatory approach to address this that focuses heavily on relationship-building and collaboration. We work to support and facilitate locally-driven efforts, rather than bringing solutions from the outside. This fosters ownership of the projects by the community, which in turn promotes sustainability. The AASD has a strong commitment to utilizing and learning from local innovation, which strengthens our projects and our organization.

What if farming better also meant protecting the forest?

At The Yungas Project, we’re working alongside farming families to rethink the way we grow. Together we’re developing more resilient plots and farming systems that raise production without cutting into the forest.

From soil and water management to agroforestry and adapting to climate change, we’re looking for ways to farm that produce well and still keep the forest standing.

Because producing more is only half of it.
The other half is finding ways to produce that let the forest stay.

Coffee can be excellent and still not earn the people who grow it what they deserve.

That’s why a big part of the Yungas model is connecting farmers with better markets, where they have more ways to sell and can get a fairer price for their coffee.

Growing better coffee is only half of it. That value also has to show up in the income of the families who grow it.

At Yungas, we work so that growing coffee also means a better life for these families, and a future on their own land.

At Raíces Andinas, we believe travel can also be a way of learning. Getting closer to the people who call a place home. Seeing the place through their eyes, not just passing through it.

For more than 15 years, Alianza Andina has built relationships of trust with communities and local organizations across different parts of Peru. Raíces Andinas grew out of that work, turning those relationships and that knowledge into community-based tourism and hands-on learning experiences.

But these experiences change something else too: they open doors for communities. Income for families and local businesses. Stronger skills. New spaces where their knowledge, their products, their ways of life can be shared and valued.

That’s how we understand tourism: an exchange where everyone has something to learn and something to offer.

Today we honor the International Day of Indigenous Women and Girls, recognizing everything they contribute: their knowledge, their leadership, and their role in shaping the future of their communities and territories.

At Alianza Andina, we see every day how indigenous women and girls face barriers that no single solution can fix. Gender, geography, age, and culture all come together in ways that are specific to each woman, each community. That’s the reality our work has to meet.

You can see this commitment in action through the Red de Mujeres Cafetaleras de Yungas, the Yungas Women Coffee Growers Network, where we’re helping women expand their opportunities, grow as leaders, and take a fuller, more equal part in their communities.

Because when indigenous women and girls grow stronger, so does the future of their communities and territories.

A specialty coffee can also tell a story of conservation.

The families who grow Yungas coffee work to improve their coffee’s quality while taking care of the soil, water, and trees on their land: recycling organic matter through composting, using biological pest control, and conserving water.

98% of surveyed farmers also report feeling better prepared to keep growing despite extreme weather, thanks to the training they’ve received.

Because great coffee and a healthy forest can come from the same place.
