The solid red coloration in their head is just out of this world.

Described by Rainer Shulte in 2006, and named by (Brown, Twomey, Pepper & Sánchez-Rodríguez, 2008). Named after their geographic area called Pampas del Sacramento, which translates to “Sacred Plains”.

EVOLUTION OF A SELVARIUM - NOW & THEN

Three years ago I set up this 45x30x30 cm vivarium for my pair of D. auratus “Peña Blanca”.

Plants have taken over, some disappeared, others flourished, others were trimmed, and others replaced. Fresh layers of leaf litter keep feeding the ecosystem, generations of arthropods support it.

There have been many courtships, many unfertilized eggs, and many froglets we lost along the way… but today they live together with their first offspring, now a full adult.

Same home, evolving ecosystem — now a family of 3. 🐸

🦟 M O S Q U I T O P A R A D I S E 🌴

These two frogs not only share the same colors (green/blue), but also cohabitate in the same mosquito-infested dry tropical palm forest. This habitat is very unique, as rain is scarcer than usual and it is composed mainly of palm trees.

During the drier season, rivers stop flowing and water gets trapped, creating the ideal environment for mosquitoes to thrive.

Even though it was hell walking 18 km in high boots under the sun, across open fields, while getting eaten alive by swarms of mosquitoes, it was definitely worth it. The pics speak for themselves.
