It’s time to come together and create a system that supports all life.

We envision a diverse multi-generational, multi-cultural space where families, singles, children and elders work together to co-create a sustainable, regenerative and resilient model for living in harmony with our Mother Earth.

We are calling in volunteers and co-founding members to help create this new yet ancient way. We are re-learning how to live sustainably, abundantly, and cooperatively on our planet.

This could be for you if you know that the current system isn’t serving us and yearn to do something about it. If you’re ready to move, to change, and to co-create a New Life. If you know that we CAN live differently and you want to help create a culture and a system where we actually DO that.

Our key areas of need are in Communications, Water Systems, Structures, Food Systems, Energy Systems, and Social Dynamics. In coming posts we’ll explore each of these areas, meantime if this speaks to you, please read our website thoroughly http://8thLifePanama.org as it contains a lot of information.

To apply: email [email protected]. In your email, tell us about yourself, what calls you to apply, your background and the journey that leads you here. Also let us know any experience you have with permaculture and of course, whether you're applying as a volunteer or as a potential co-founding member, and your timing.

When we receive your message, we will schedule a video call and take things from there.

It’s time! Now is the time to come together and create a system that supports all life. Help us to co-create this new way.

You know that something’s not right – or rather, that a lot isn’t right. Our system is failing us and we need a new way to live. You know it in your heart. You know it in your gut. You want to do something about it and you’re ready. Ready to move. Ready to change. Ready to make a difference. Ready to co-create a New Earth.

We are calling in volunteers and co-founding members to help create this new way. We are re-learning how to live sustainably, abundantly, and cooperatively on Mother Earth.

This could be for you if you are yearning to create a regenerative and resilient culture and are moving purposefully in that direction. If you know that we CAN live differently and you want to help create a culture and a system where we actually DO that.

Our key areas of need are in Communications, Water Systems, Structures, Food Systems, Energy Systems, and Social Dynamics. Explore what that means to us and if this speaks to you, please read our website thoroughly, as it contains a lot of information: http://8thLifePanama.org.

Swales play a key role in any permaculture landscape. Their function is to slow, soak and spread water, keeping as much water within our landscapes as possible while preventing erosion and improving soil fertility.

We have had the great fortune to learn from people more experienced than us in earthworks and to share what we’ve learned with everyone who visits us, whether as a volunteer, a tour participant, or a learner at any of our workshops and courses.

There is always more to learn and more to do to improve the land we steward. Would you like to learn more about swales? Let us know in the comments.

~~~
Los swales desempeñan un papel clave en cualquier paisaje permacultural. Su función es ralentizar, empapar y dispersar el agua, reteniendo la mayor cantidad posible de agua dentro de nuestros paisajes mientras previenen la erosión y mejoran la fertilidad del suelo.
Hemos tenido la gran fortuna de aprender de personas con más experiencia que nosotros en obras de tierra y de compartir lo aprendido con todos los que nos visitan, ya sea como voluntarios, participantes en un tour o aprendices en cualquiera de nuestros talleres y cursos.
Siempre hay más que aprender y más por hacer para mejorar la tierra que gestionamos. ¿Te gustaría aprender más sobre los swales? Cuéntanoslo en los comentarios.
Have you ever heard someone say, “I scrolled for an hour, and I feel so much better”?
No… 🤨 It has become a habit for almost everyone in our society today. It’s something many of us do, and there are scientific reasons behind it : ……
Scrolling itself isn’t the problem. But escaping without realizing it, day after day, from a life that makes us unhappy — that is.
Find meaning again. Reconnect with what truly matters. Open yourself to others, and to yourself 🍀. Come volunteer with us at 8th Life Panama and start reconnecting!
~~~

¿Alguna vez has oído a alguien decir: "He estado deslizando por las redes sociales durante una hora y me siento mucho mejor"?

No...

Here’s another example of permi-construction. Our seedling nursery was built using natural wood posts and re-used roof trusses and roofing materials. Our crack team of volunteers designed the structure and played with the not-quite straight tree trunks that were delivered. They welded and aligned the roof trusses with the posts and installed the roof material.

Once the roof was up, we built worktables from used pallets then installed an iguana-proof fence around the entire structure. We used the structure as a nursery through 2023 and in 2024 began converting it into an all-purpose room. At that point the seedlings were moved up beside the yellow house, since most planting at the lower elevations was already done by then. In any case, it makes more sense to carry plants downhill than up, and the rest of the areas to plant are closer to the yellow house.

We now have a new nursery planned to build alongside the water tank at the top of the hill. That way it’ll be easy to tend the seedlings and no matter where they’re needed, it’ll be a downhill journey.

~~~
Aquí tienes otro ejemplo de construcción permacultura. El vivero fue construido usando postes de madera y cerchas y tejalit reutilizados. Nuestro equipo de voluntarios diseñó la estructura y jugó con los troncos que no estaban del todo rectos. Soldaron y alinearon las cerchas del techo con los postes e instalaron los tejados.
Una vez que el techo estuvo instalado, construimos mesas de trabajo con palets usados e instalamos una cerca a prueba de iguanas alrededor de toda la estructura. Usamos la estructura como vivero hasta 2023 y en 2024 comenzamos a convertirla en un salón multiuso. En ese momento, las plántulas se colocaron junto a la casa amarilla, ya que la mayoría de la siembra en las zonas bajas ya estaba hecha. En cualquier caso, tiene más sentido llevar las plantas cuesta abajo que hacia arriba, y el resto de las zonas para plantar están más cerca de la casa amarilla.
Ahora tenemos planeado un nuevo vivero para construir junto al tanque de agua en la cima de la colina. Así será fácil cuidar las plántulas y, sea donde sea, será un camino cuesta abajo.
It is very humbling and gratifying when we receive this type of feedback from our volunteers. Here's a few excerpts from what Kozi says in the video:
My main highlight is learning about the permaculture itself.
I've visited now maybe 6 or 7 permaculture projects and this project is by far the most advanced ... I could live here now, with the food that is being generated here ... which no other project that I've visited is at that level or even close to that level."
I've learned more than I could have imagined learning in this time.
WOW! That's a high bar! We look forward to keeping up the momentum and providing enriching experiences.
If you're interested in volunteering or joining us, full information can be found on our website, linked in our bio, and there's also information on the key people we're looking for in the 'Join Us' highlight.
Peace, love & abundance everyone!
I admit it – when we started out, I didn’t have any practical experience creating a tropical food forest. Yes, I had been studying permaculture for years and had completed a PDC. Yes, I had observed the land for two years before starting on the food forest. And yes, I had the support of both local people and permaculture specialists. Still, we made oh so many mistakes!
Some we could remedy. Some weren’t all that important. And some led to some tropical hardwood trees to be planted way too close together. It was a real journey and an amazing experience. We’re now in forest maintenance mode and are still filling in the understory as the soil fertility improves.
We couldn’t have done it without the help of our local farm workers and loads of volunteers. Thank you to everyone who has helped along the way! Please come back and visit soon.
Lo admito: cuando empezamos, no tenía experiencia práctica creando un bosque tropical comestible. Sí, llevaba años estudiando permacultura y había completado un PDC. Sí, había observado la tierra durante dos años antes de empezar con el bosque comestible. Y sí, conté con el apoyo tanto de gente local como de especialistas en permacultura. ¡Aun así, cometimos tantos errores!
Algunos podríamos remediarlos. Algunos no eran tan importantes. Y algunos llevaron a plantar árboles tropicales maderables demasiado juntos. Fue un viaje real y una experiencia increíble. Ahora estamos en modo de mantenimiento forestal y seguimos rellenando el sotobosque a medida que mejora la fertilidad del suelo.
No lo habríamos conseguido sin la ayuda de los trabajadores agrícolas locales y de muchos voluntarios. ¡Gracias a todos los que han ayudado en el camino! Por favor, vuelve a visitarnos pronto.
Cooperative creativity is central to life here. The buildings on the finca embody permaculture design principles, combining re-used & up-cycled materials with natural building techniques. They were designed cooperatively & iteratively, starting with practical basics, making functional improvements & moving into aesthetics & comforts.
Follow the transformation of a tractor trailer into the Rainbow Bunkhouse in all its colorful glory in this series of photos.
It sleeps up to 10 people & boasts a covered deck made from pallets where folks gather to read, work, eat & play. The outdoor kitchen, made from pallets, reclaimed lumber, & re-used roofing materials, includes both cob & propane stoves.
And in case you wondered, the bunkhouse got its name from the rainbows we often see there.
From our team of designers to a local team of builders & the hands of many volunteers, the bunkhouse transformed from a storage room to a creative, comfortable, & colorful living space. Thanks everyone for your creative cooperation!
La creatividad cooperativa es central a la vida aquí. Las estructuras de la finca encarnan principios de diseño permacultural, combinando materiales reutilizados y reciclados con la construcción natural. Fueron diseñados de forma cooperativa e iterativa, comenzando por lo básico práctico, realizando mejoras funcionales y pasando a la estética y el confort.
Sigue la transformación de un furgón en la Barraca Arcoíris en toda su colorida gloria en esta serie de fotos.
Alberga hasta 10 personas y cuenta con una terraza cubierta hecha de palés donde la gente se reúne para leer, trabajar, comer y divertirse. La cocina, hecha de palés, madera reciclada y zinc reutilizado, incluye estufas de barro y de gas.
Y por si te lo preguntabas, la barraca recibe su nombre de los arcoíris que solemos ver allí.
Desde nuestro equipo de diseñadores hasta un equipo local de constructores y la mano de muchos voluntarios, la barraca se transformó de un depósito a un espacio de vida creativo, cómodo y colorido. ¡Gracias a todos por su colaboración creativa!
We love it when our volunteers get a lot out of their time with us! Here's what Romane had to say:
"I've learned so much here in just a few weeks and it will stay with me for the rest of midlife! Because each of our small daily actions has an impact and deserves to be done consciously."
