🎣 WHAT IS FISH OF THE MONTH? 🎣

If you haven’t heard about our Fish of the Month competition yet, here’s how it works!

Each month, we nominate a different target species and select a mystery weight. The member whose fish is closest to that weight wins $50 cash or a prize valued at $50.

The competition is open to all current Junior and Senior financial members and includes boat, land-based and kontiki fishing.

Simply catch the month’s target species within the MB&FC sponsorship grid and follow the usual club weigh-in procedure.

If no qualifying fish is weighed during the month, the prize jackpots to the next challenge!

🎣 JULY FISH OF THE MONTH WINNER 🎣

Congratulations to Peter Hazael, was our Fish of the Month winner back in July with a 0.418 kg gurnard! 🐟👏

Our new monthly Mystery Weight Species Challenge encourages club members to get out fishing throughout the season, with a different target species and mystery weight each month.

The competition is open to all current Junior and Senior financial members, including boat, land-based and kontiki fishing.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to our recent Matariki Land-Based Fishing Competition. We had 34 keen anglers braving the winter conditions to give it a crack.

The weather certainly turned it on for us and while the fish didn't exactly get the memo, everyone put in a great effort. The fishing was tough, making every fish that reached the weigh station a well-earned achievement.

It was fantastic to see familiar faces, along with a few new ones, supporting the club. Days like these are what it's all about - getting outdoors, enjoying good company, and sharing a few laughs and fishing stories, whether the fish are biting or not.

A special thank you goes to our competition sponsor, Howie's Lawns & Mulching Matarangi, for their generous support. We really appreciate local businesses getting behind our club and helping make events like this possible.

Kahawai

🥇 1st – Dewald Barkhuizem – 2.134 kg

Snapper

Unfortunately, no snapper made it to the weigh station this year - a true reflection of just how challenging the fishing conditions were!

Trevally

🥇 1st – Stefan Vermeulen – 2.464 kg

And of course, we couldn't finish without giving Bob a mention! While everyone else was chasing snapper, kahawai and trevally, Bob somehow managed to hook... a stingray. Or perhaps it hooked him! It may have been the only thing he caught all day, but he definitely went home with the best story. 😂🎣

A massive thank you to everyone who helped organise the day and to all those who attended and made it another successful club event.

Looking Ahead to 2027 - Given the challenging fishing and the middle-of-winter timing, which limits catches off the beach, the committee has decided to shake things up for 2027.

Keep an eye on our website and social media pages, where we'll be announcing a new land-based fishing competition to be held when the weather is a little warmer and the fish are, hopefully, a bit more cooperative!

We can't wait to see you all at the next event.

🎣 Matariki Surfcasting, Kontiki & Drone Competition – Tomorrow! 🌌

Manawatia a Matariki!

Join us tomorrow, Saturday 11 July, for a great day of land-based fishing on beautiful Matarangi Beach.

Whether you’re a seasoned surfcaster or trying drone or kontiki fishing for the first time, we’d love to see you there. It’s a fun, family-friendly event open to club and non-club members, with cash prizes up for grabs!

📍 Key Information:

🗓️ Date: Saturday 11 July 2026

🎣 Fishing starts: 12:01am (no fishing before this time)

📍 Location: Matarangi Beach – Spit & Surf Side only

🐟 Eligible species: Snapper (350mm minimum), Kahawai & Trevally

⚖️ Weigh-in: 3:00pm–4:00pm at the Matarangi Fire Station

🏆 Prize Giving: 4:30pm at the Matarangi Fire Station

Entry:

💲 $20 per angler

💲 $40 per family (2 adults + 2 children 12 & under)

Remember:

✔️ One fish per species, per angler for weigh-in.

✔️ Tickets must be purchased before the competition starts.

✔️ Fish safely, respect other beach users, and help us keep our coastline clean.

With Matariki rising above us, it’s a great opportunity to get the family outdoors, enjoy our amazing coastline, and hopefully land a prize-winning fish.

As Matariki rises in mid-winter, we get a special opportunity. Cloud cover allowing, look to the northeastern horizon just before sunrise to see Matariki come into view as a small, pulsating collection of stars. Also known as the Pleiades star cluster, it can be identified by the seven star ‘sisters’.

Want to find it on competition morning?

First, find the three bright stars in a line known as Tautoru (Orion's Belt).

Next, trace to the left until you find a pyramid-shaped group of stars called Te Kokotā.

Finally, look just to the left of Te Kokotā, and you will see Matariki.

What better way to honour this occasion than by experiencing the best of Matarangi? Come down to the beach, try your luck at landing a great catch, and soak in the breathtaking sunrise as Matariki watches over. It's the perfect way to start the day!
