Kia Ora e te whanau

As conditions begin to ease, we are now looking to close Ngunguru Marae later today.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our community for staying connected, sharing updates, and looking out for one another throughout this weather event. Your awareness and care have made a real difference.

Ngā mihi also to our emergency services and response teams for keeping our people safe during this time.

Mōrena Northland, teams from councils, contractors and power networks will be out this morning assessing the damage to our region. In the meantime, all of Northland's agencies and emergency services are united in their plea to limit travel, to take extreme care on the roads and to not attempt to drive through floodwaters - emergency services continued to carry out rescues from vehicles trapped in floodwaters throughout yesterday evening. The damage to the roading network in some locations is likely to be significant.

Emergency services in Kaitāia assisted with the evacuation of residents overnight after some homes began experiencing flooding or were at risk of flooding from the Awanui River. The main area affected covered roughly three streets at the northern end of Kaitāia.

Around 40 people were provided accommodation at Kaitāia College overnight. Assessment teams will be out this morning checking the evacuated areas and river conditions to confirm when it’s safe for residents to return, with the aim of getting people back home as soon as possible.

PAKn’SAVE Kaitaia has this morning advised that it will be opening later this morning at 8am due to the flooding; however the fuel site will be closed until further notice.

River levels on the Awanui and surrounding waterways have now receded and are currently sitting below warning thresholds.

A massive thank you to all our emergency service teams for the amazing work you do to keep our communities safe.

The MetService New Zealand heavy rain warning was lifted as expected at 4am this morning (Friday) but the region's roading network in particular (and to a lesser extent, the electricity network) has been significantly impacted.

The majority of rivers throughout the region have peaked and are now receding. Rainfall totals from 4pm Wednesday to 4am this morning are shown in the image from the Northland Regional Council. The highest totals were recorded by gauges at Waimamaku at Wekaweka Road in Waima (275mm), the upper Ngunguru River at Dugmores Rock (245mm), and Whakapara at Puhipuhi (239.5mm).

Notably both the highest and lowest rainfall totals were recorded on the west side of Northland, with the lowest figures being the Awaroa at Wallace Road in Ruawai (68.5mm) and the Kaipara Harbour at Pouto Point (22.5mm).

A local state of emergency has been declared for the Whangārei and Far North districts as of today (Thursday 26 March), for an initial period of seven days.

The declarations reflect the increasing impact caused by this event and enables emergency services and response agencies to draw on additional resources, and access emergency powers to assist affected communities if required.

Please ensure you are following your local district council for the latest updates and local welfare support.

Mōrena Northland, we've got a long but important post for you this morning 👇

MetService New Zealand has reviewed the watches and warnings for Northland and upgraded parts of the region to a Red Heavy Rain Warning, with Orange Strong Wind and Heavy Rain Warnings remaining in place for the rest of the region.

A Red Warning is only issued for the most severe and impactful weather events.

This is expected to be a long‑duration event, with rain and wind continuing over several days. While some areas may not receive heavy rainfall at warning levels today (25 March), MetService expects rainfall to build over time, reaching significant levels as the event develops.

The main period of concern is from Thursday afternoon through to Friday morning, particularly for areas covered by the Red Warning, east of Kaikohe from Doubtless Bay down to Whangārei, where 270 to 320 mm of rain is possible during the warning period.

With this level of rainfall, dangerous river conditions, flooding, slips, landslides, hazardous driving conditions, and road closures are all possible.

This remains an evolving situation, so please continue to stay up to date with the latest forecasts and information from MetService, as well as updates from your local and regional councils.

🙏A big thank you to everyone who has taken the time to prepare ahead of this incoming weather. For those who haven’t yet had the chance, we encourage you to use what time you can this morning to ensure you’re ready if this severe weather does impact you.

Taking a few simple steps now can make a big difference, and even if conditions aren’t as severe where you are, there’s no harm in being prepared.

🔑For anyone who hasn’t yet, or who needs a reminder — if it is safe to do so:
✅Clear drains and gutters
✅Secure loose outdoor items
✅Move valuables and vehicles away from flood-prone areas
✅Relocate stock from low-lying land and bring pets indoors
✅Have essential supplies ready in case of power outages or road closures
✅Have a grab bag and evacuation plan ready
✅Do not enter floodwaters: it only takes a small amount of moving water to knock you off your feet or sweep a vehicle away.
✅Avoid unnecessary travel over this period. Conditions may deteriorate quickly, and roads may close with little warning.
✅Be prepared to self evacuate if you see rising water, feel unsafe, or notice conditions worsening.
✅Be aware of landslide risks, and keep well away from areas that have recently been affected by slips or landslides. If you notice cracks in the ground, tilting trees or power poles, unusual noises, or rapid changes in stream levels, leave immediately.
✅If at any time you feel you, your whānau, or your property are at immediate risk, please call emergency services on 111

📍Your local district council is the best place to both report issues with and get updates on, local infrastructure, such as local roads.

Northland Civil Defence works across the councils to provide local welfare support. If centres or marae are open to provide support, they will be published on the district council websites below:
