Since recieving Hinemoana ll in May 2025 incredible opportunities have cultivated for our people of Ngātiwai, reconnecting our iwi to our mātauranga māori and unifying our coastline connections.

The Marae Moana project designing something that would be beneficial and long lasting ensuring our people have avenues to progress and excel in traditional practices that reconnect us to our cultural identity.

Under the guidance of Ngaa Mata a Karewa and Te Kura Waka Navigators in Tainui alongside a mixed cohort, Marae Moana begun its first intake of traditional navigators. We now have a strong cohort of 30 passionate and willing Ngātiwai ākonga who are learning the foundations of traditional navigation. This is Te Au Here Toroa.

On the 4th of September Te Au Here Toroa began a 4 week wānanga where the crew mapped out a path to sail Hinemoana ll to Whangārei for some necessary TLC and survey checks.

The Te Au Here Toroa crew worked tirelessly to get everything done within a strict timeframe, with Nicholas Palmer teaching the crew foundational land skills and making sure everyone was kept safe throughout the mahi. We thank them for all their time and aroha this past month.

Hinemoana ll has returned back to our moana looking incredible, sailed back to Tutukaka Marina by crew members and three captains, Russel of Hōkūle’a, Zebidiah of Paikea, and Manihera Forbes from Ngaa Mata a Karewa who we are so grateful to have walked alongside in this navigation space since the beginning.

As many of you will be aware the main road into Whangaruru reopened on Friday. With road access now restored the temporary community bus service that has been operating since March 2026 will be coming to an end.
 
This week will be the final week of service, with the last bus runs taking place on Tuesday and Thursday.
 
We understand this news may be disappointing for some members of our community. The service has been well used and highly valued over the past several months. From the outset however, it was established as a temporary measure to support whānau while access into and out of the rohe was significantly affected.
 
This service became much more than simply a bus route. It helped connect whānau to essential appointments, services, employment, education, and shopping. It also provided much needed relief and reassurance during a challenging time when many people felt isolated following the flooding events and the closure of the main road.
 
Ngātiwai Trust Board would like to sincerely thank the Whangārei District Council and the team at Whangārei Passenger Services for working alongside us to make this service possible.

Most importantly, we thank our community for your patience, resilience, and support throughout this time.

As we draw closer to Russell Road reopening āpōpō, we look back at some of the before and afters from the most recent work along with the history of the road in pictures.

Almost 100 years ago in May 1930, the Auckland Weekly News reported that the road was almost complete. It was described as branching off from the Whangārei–Kawakawa Road, 14 miles north of Whangārei and following easy grades for 8½ miles before the long climb over the Huruiki Mountains. From the top, the ocean could be seen for the first time before the road dropped down towards Helena Bay, Mōkau and Ōakura Bay.

Almost a century later Russell Road continues to be an important connection for our coastal communities.
