Me tipu i a wīwī, me tipu i a wāwā, tūria ki te wera, piri ki te rito o te rengarenga, waiho me whakapakari ki te hua o te kawariki.
It is a momentous time for our rohe, as our leaders, grounded in the wisdom of where we have come from, continue to guide us forward and stand as pou for our uri, both present and future.
We were truly privileged to be hosted by Te Kia Ora Marae and Ngāti Rango to celebrate Ngarimu Blair as he steps into his new role as Tumu Whakarae for Ngā Maunga Whakahī o Kaipara.

🌿He Pānui Aroha | Te Haerenga ki te Tangi o Ahorangi, Whatarangi Winiata🌿

Papā te whatitiri i te rangi, ka rū te whenua, ka ngāoko te moana, e ko te tohu o te mate. Ko koe rā e te Ahorangi, e Whatarangi Winiata, ka riro nei i te au kume, i te au rōmā, i te au hirere, e hirere atu nei ki te tū pō o te tini. Moe mai e kara. Nei a Ngāti Whātua te tangi atu nei.

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Ahorangi Whatarangi Winiata, one of the most influential Māori leaders, thinkers, educators, and advocates of our time.

Throughout his life, Matua Whatarangi made an extraordinary contribution to Māori development, championing tino rangatiratanga, Māori education, economic independence, and the advancement of our people.

His vision, intellect, and unwavering commitment to kaupapa Māori helped shape institutions, inspire generations of leaders, and strengthen the foundations upon which many of our whānau, hapū, and iwi continue to build today. His legacy will endure throughout Māoridom for generations to come.

As a mark of our collective respect and aroha, Ngāti Whātua Nui Tonu will travel to pay our respects to Matua Whatarangi while he lies in state at Ngātokowaru Marae.

Following discussions across Ngāti Whātua leadership, it has been agreed that we will whakaeke together on Sunday, arriving at Ngātokowaru Marae at approximately 12pm. This will allow time to connect with whanaunga travelling from across the motu before our formal whakaeke at 1pm.

Haerenga Details
📍 Destination: Ngātokowaru Marae, Te Awahou (Levin)
🕛 Arrival: Sunday 7 June at 12pm
🕐 Whakaeke: 1pm

We ask that everyone bring with them the very best of themselves:

• Bring your best attitude, your best tikanga, your best ngākau, and your best aroha.
• Bring a koha.
• Bring any medication or rongoā you may require.
• Please wear your number one huimate attire and ensure you are dressed appropriately for the occasion.

Most importantly, come prepared for the weather. Tangihanga proceedings will involve time outdoors, and temperatures are expected to be very cold. Please bring a warm jacket, scarf, gloves, thick socks, and a beanie to ensure you remain comfortable throughout the day.

Above all, remember that we travel not only as individuals, but as representatives of our whānau, hapū, marae, and iwi.

Project Update: Kia Tau te Wai, Kia Tau te Ora. This important kaupapa at Te Houhanga a Rongo Marae will reduce flood duration and severity. 🌧️
Following the impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle, this mahi is focused on strengthening site safety and ensuring the marae can continue to serve its people and whenua for generations to come. Te Houhanga a Rongo Marae is a vital hub for community wellbeing, refuge, and resilience, especially as climate events become more frequent.
🔧 Key works completed include:
• Rehabilitation of ageing culverts and floodgates
• Repairs to the stop bank
• Installation of new piped and open drainage systems
• Safety fencing and improved access
• Upgrades to road reticulation and stormwater infrastructure
🙏 A special mihi to Ihapera Paniora for preparing the funding application, and to Walter Nesbit and Parata Parore for their leadership throughout the project delivery.
Ngā mihi also to Northland Regional Council, Kaipara District Council, and WSP Design & Engineering for their technical expertise across planning, design, and consenting.
👏 Huge thanks to Gary Wippy and the team at Kauri Coast Contracting for delivering the construction works.
This project is funded by the Ministry for the Environment through the Māori Climate Platform Fund and managed by our Kotahitanga team.
Together, we are building stronger, safer, and more resilient marae for our communities. 💙

🌿He Pānui Aroha | Te Haerenga ki te Tangi o Tā Hirini Moko Mead🌿

Kura tangi wiwini, kura tangi wawana.
He kura whenua, he kura tangata, ka riro i te kura o te ahiahi.

Te Puru o Mātaatua, Te Tihi o Pūtauaki, Te Aporei o Ngāti Awa, Te Poutokomanawa o Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, Tā Hirini Moko Mead, kua ngū tō reo i te rā nei.

Nei a Ngāti Whātua Nui Tonu e mōteatea atu nei, e apakura atu nei, e tangi atu nei.

Ngāti Whātua Nui Tonu, Maunganui ki Tāmaki, tēnā tātou i a Tītahi, tēnā tātou i a Rangitaumārewa, tēnā tātou i ngā kurakura o Te Kahu o Te Hana.

It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Tā Hirini Moko Mead, one of the most influential Māori leaders, educators, scholars, authors, and transformational thinkers of our time. His lifelong dedication to the advancement of te reo Māori, mātauranga Māori, tikanga Māori, and Māori education has shaped generations of leaders and strengthened the foundations upon which many of our people stand today.

As a mark of our collective respect and aroha, Ngāti Whātua Nui Tonu will travel to pay our respects while Tā Hirini lies in state at Kokohinau Marae, Te Teko.

Following discussions across Ngāti Whātua leadership, it has been agreed that we will whakaeke together on Monday, arriving at Kokohinau Marae at approximately 11.00am, allowing time to reconnect with whanaunga travelling from across the motu before our formal whakaeke at 12.00pm. To support whānau and ensure we travel safely together, a bus has been arranged.
