Te Kopu - Pacific Indigenous & Local Knowledge Centre of Distinction Indigenous & Local Knowledge contributing to global decisions; encouraging indigenous enterprise & guiding future generations.

Indigenous knowledge informing global decisions; indigenous enterprise; and development of future generations for the Pacific

It is appropriate that the Indigenous Centre is located here on the Hihiaua Peninsula,

Whāngarei Terenga Paraoa, which, is often translated as The meeting place of Whales or metaphorically The meeting place of Chiefs. Legend has it, the famed Polynesian navigator Kupe was

the first person to see Whāngarei Harbour’s dramatic headlands, while on his way back to Hawaiki around 950 AD, Kupe left directions to his people on how to return to Aotearoa from Hawaiki,

”Waiho i te taha katau o te rā, o te marama, o Kōpū rere ai.”
”Let it be to the right of the sun, of the moon, of the Morning Star on high.” Kupe (800AD)

The Pacific Indigenous & Local Knowledge Centre of Distinction was established to assist in mainstreaming Indigenous & Local Knowledge into the Intergovernmental Policy-Science Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services and in monitoring and implementation of the Platform’s work.

Cultivating Agroecology Transformations – Presenting transformation initiatives of GIZ’s Agroecology Leadership Academy – A webinar on MS Teams by GIZ and the Agroecology TPP

Thursday 23.01.2025 @ 10.30-12.00 UTC

How to transform to agroecology with ease and effect? How to spark ambitious action, motivate a range of actors and deal with challenges and obstacles? Join our webinar!

GIZ’s Agroecology Leadership Academy was a comprehensive learning and developing programme for 38 participants from different countries across Africa and India, implemented from January to November 2024. It aimed at empowering leaders and transformation agents to catalyze agroecology sustainable development, to navigate complexity and to be powerful transformation agents for agroecology.
As part of the academy, seven country teams were supported to put transformation initiatives into actions. Within a few months, the participants for instance catalyzed effective action by bringing unusual stakeholders together, developing innovative media products and spreading hands-on knowledge.
Hosted by the Agroecology TPP, in this 90-minute English webinar, the Agroecology Leadership Academy and the exciting and stimulating transformation initiatives from Kenya, India and Ethiopia will be presented.

The Agroecology Leadership Academy was implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and conducted with financial support from the European Union (EU) as part of the EU co-funded programme "ProSilience: Enhancing soils and agroecology for resilient agri-food systems in Sub-Sahara Africa". Approaches developed in the Academy will be made available through the TPP website for use and replication by others.

Tāngata Whenua Environmental Monitoring Fund Open Now

Northland Regional Council’s Tāngata Whenua Environmental Monitoring fund recognises the strong connection tāngata whenua has with our taiao.

The fund is to support tāngata whenua to undertake their own environmental monitoring within Te Taitokerau.

The purpose of the new fund is to:

-support tāngata whenua to undertake monitoring activities in partnership with Northland Regional Council (NRC)

-increase the skills and capacity of tāngata whenua to undertake monitoring

-share knowledge and information so both tāngata whenua and NRC can better understand and manage changes in the environment.

There are three main environmental monitoring types; air, soil, and water.

Types of mahi the fund supports includes:

-monitoring by tāngata whenua to understand the cultural and physical health of fresh and coastal waterbodies (and associated ecosystems) and / or -the impacts of climate change on fresh or coastal waterways

-development of indicators or methods for assessing the ‘cultural health’ of fresh and coastal waters and assessing the impacts of climate change

-assisting in the review or development of parts of iwi or hapū environmental management plans related to the above

-training and capacity building for tāngata whenua to undertake environmental monitoring related to the above.

-Techniques to monitor may include filtration, sedimentation, electrostatic samples, impingers, absorption, condensation, grab sampling, and composite sampling. Data collected from these methods of environmental monitoring are either categorized, analysed or visualized, and create actionable insights that drive informed decision making.

Closes February 28th!
