Job Explore 2025: Career opportunities on show in Whangārei

Te Ora Hou Centre is set to become a hive of employment, education and training opportunities as the Job Explore careers expo makes its way to Whangārei on 18 March.
The expo is being organised by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) and is designed to link employers and training providers with job seekers and those leaving education. Information is available on Connected.govt.nz.

It’s expected to attract hundreds of attendees with over 50 interactive stalls including Northland Waste, NZ Defence Force, Jobs for Mums and Hato Hone St. John.

MSD Regional Commissioner Graham MacPherson says the event will be a one-stop careers shop with opportunities to meet with support networks, training providers and employers from across industry sectors.

“Work is key to people being able to move forward and we’re committed to doing everything we can to help support people into jobs.”

Community members are welcome to attend from 9.30am – 2pm, with students and school leavers exploring the expo in a mid-afternoon session.

“It will be a fun, interactive way for people of all ages and experience levels to explore all the options available to them,” says MacPherson.

A series of eight mini-workshops hosted by various stallholders will be run throughout the day to showcase different job seeking resources, including a 20-minute session on money management presented by Westpac, and another with Creative Northland on creative problem-solving while job-hunting.

Employers will be at the ready to discuss career progression into a variety of industry sectors, including health care, construction, and infrastructure.

Education and training providers including BCITO, University of Auckland and Work Ready NZ, will be on hand to discuss apprenticeships, courses, and other pathways to employment – including CV creation, interview skills and driver licencing advice.

Virtual Reality (VR) headsets and hands-on exhibits will be available to give people a flavour of work in different industries and showcase industry skills such as Hazard Management, Confined Spaces, Working at Heights and Food Safety and Hygiene.

Future red meat leaders of the future wanted



Applications have opened for the Meat Industry Association (MIA) 2024 scholarship programme, aimed at tertiary students who are looking to a career in the red meat sector beyond the farm gate.



Up to four new scholarships, a mixture of undergraduate and postgraduate positions, are available.



Undergraduate scholarships are worth $5,000 a year for each year of study for up to three years. Post-graduate scholarships are worth $10,000 a year for each year of study for up to two years.



“The red meat sector is an exciting industry to work with a range of opportunities available,” says MIA chief executive Sirma Karapeeva.



“New Zealand is a world-leader in producing nutritious, safe and quality food and our people are at the heart of this success.



“The industry is also New Zealand’s second largest goods exporter and largest manufacturer. We’re one of the country’s biggest employers, representing 4.7 percent of national employment.



“As well as financial support, MIA scholars benefit from being provided mentoring, networking opportunities across the sector and assistance with obtaining study-related projects or vacation work in the industry.



“Applications are welcome from across a wide range of fields of study, which applicants can show are relevant to meat processing, marketing or exporting,



“That includes food sciences, nutrition, engineering, process design, industrial innovation, environmental science and international marketing and policy.



“We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds and would like to support those who would struggle to get further education.”



The programme is for New Zealand citizens or permanent residents studying at a tertiary institution. Applications for the scholarships close on Monday 27th November 2023.
