Are you keen to begin learning with your pre-schooler at home? HIPPY Whangārei can support you with that!
Here's how:
HIPPY is a completely FREE home-based education programme that enables and empowers parents/caregivers in their role as their child's first and most influential teacher.
Who is HIPPY for?
HIPPY is for all tamariki aged 2-5 years who live anywhere in the Whangārei District.
HIPPY provides parents/caregivers with fun educational materials and guidance to help them create a home learning environment that supports their child's development and success in school.
How does HIPPY work?
Families/whānau are given colourful storybooks and hands-on activities to do with their child.
Parents/caregivers then work with their child 15-30 minutes a day, 5 days a week during school term time.
HIPPY Coordinators and tutors support families/whānau through:
• Weekly home visits to role-play activities with parents to show them how to use the resources and teach their child.
• Monthly group meetings/whanau hui to inspire learning, support, and connection amongst HIPPY parents.
• Connecting parents with other community services.
• Helping transition tamariki to ECE/Kohanga Reo or school/kura.
In HIPPY, parents are the teacher of their child, and we support them to do this!

HIPPY Whangarei tutors and coordinator were very fortunate to have a presentation recently from Alicia Bekker of Empowered Authenticity about the concept of matrescence. We were given in-depth insights and understandings of the changes and challenges of motherhood which were very valuable for supporting our work with our mums in their homes. Many thanks Alicia for generously sharing your time and knowledge with us to enhance our work.

What an incredibly fulfilling day. 🌟

Today, I had the privilege of presenting a professional development training session for the wonderful team at HIPPY Whangārei District (Home Interaction Programme for Parents and Youngsters) Whangārei. We dived into an introduction to Matrescence, the developmental, neurological, and identity transformation that women experience when they become mothers. It was so humbling to hear others’ experiences of change - talking about the reality of motherhood without sugarcoating the tough parts.

Educating and supporting the professionals who work directly with mothers of children aged 2 to 5 years is more impactful and rewarding than I ever could have imagined. When we equip frontline coordinators and tutors with the language of Matrescence, we change the way mothers are seen, heard, and supported in our communities.

A massive, heartfelt thank you to the team at HIPPY for inviting me into your space, for your open hearts, and for the vital work you do with home-based learning in our community. 🤍

Moments like today simply reinforce my deepest passion. Building Empowered Authenticity Ltd isn’t just about movement, mindfulness, and mindset; it’s about advocating for the invisible, monumental shift of motherhood.

I also want to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible, pioneering mahi being done across Aotearoa to bring Matrescence into the light. I am so grateful to stand alongside dedicated spaces like nz and , among many other beautiful advocates who are changing the maternal narrative daily.

It truly takes a village to support a mother.

This is just the beginning. I am so incredibly proud of this path, and I cannot wait to collaborate with more maternal health and family service providers in the future to keep empowering our mamas.
