🍪 A little baking. A lot of kindness.

Every fortnight, volunteers from Good Bi***es Baking provide home baking for Hospice Whanganui patients.

Sometimes a biscuit or slice is more than just a treat. It can be a moment of comfort, a shared cup of tea with whānau, and a reminder that people care.

To the wonderful bakers behind GBB Whanganui, thank you for the kindness you continue to share with our patients.

Your generosity makes a difference, one batch at a time. 💛

Have you noticed the new displays appearing in our Hospice Shops?

As part of our Behind the Counter campaign, we're sharing more about the people, partnerships, volunteers, and community support that help make Hospice Whanganui possible.

Hospice care doesn't happen in isolation. It is made possible by a community of supporters who donate, volunteer, fundraise, advocate, and give their time in countless ways.

The displays help tell those stories and highlight the connection between our community and the care provided to patients and whānau across our region.

During National Volunteer Week, we're particularly grateful for the volunteers who support Hospice Whanganui in so many different ways. Last year alone, 120 volunteers contributed more than 21,870 hours helping us care for our community.

Hospice Whanganui is truly community supporting community. 💛

💛 Happy National Volunteer Week 💛

This week, we celebrate the incredible volunteers who help make Hospice Whanganui possible.

Last year, 120 volunteers contributed more than 21,870 hours supporting Hospice Whanganui. From our gardens and retail shops, to our fundraising events, committees, and behind-the-scenes support, volunteers contribute their time, skills, and kindness in countless ways.

Their generosity strengthens our organisation, supports our patients and whānau, and helps us continue caring for our community.

To every Hospice Whanganui volunteer – past, present and future – thank you.

Your contribution matters, your kindness is valued, and the difference you make is felt every day.

Because when it comes to caring for our community, it takes all of us. 💛

We'll be honest.

When people think about volunteering in a hospice shop, they often think they need retail experience.

They don't.

You don't need retail experience.
You won't be thrown in the deep end.
You won't be on your own.

What you do need?

Kindness.
Reliability.
A willingness to be part of a team.

We're not angels.
We're real people who care.

And sometimes, you might just end up staying for the people.

💛 Thank you, Fonterra 💛

Hospice Whanganui is incredibly grateful to have received a $1,000 grant through the Fonterra Doing Good Fund.

This funding has helped support the work of our Registered Nurses, who provide specialist palliative care and support to patients and whānau across our region every day.

From care in the community to support in our Inpatient Unit, our nurses are at the heart of helping people live with dignity, comfort, and choice through life’s final chapter.

Thank you to Fonterra for your generosity and commitment to supporting community wellbeing 💛

A thoughtful and important read from The Spinoff exploring the growing need for palliative care in Aotearoa New Zealand as our population ages.

The article highlights the reality many hospices across the country are facing - increasing demand, funding pressures, and the importance of ensuring people and whānau can access compassionate end-of-life care when they need it most.

At Hospice Whanganui, we see every day the difference that patient- and whānau-led care can make, not only for those receiving care, but for the people walking alongside them.

Palliative care is about dignity, comfort, connection, and support through one of life’s most significant chapters.

We’re grateful to the many staff, volunteers, supporters, and community members who help make this care possible in our region 💛

As New Zealand’s population ages, the number of people dying each year will rise rapidly. With hospices already experiencing funding shortages, who will care for us at the end of our lives?

💛 What a wonderful evening at Small Talks Whanganui.

A huge thank you to Kathy, Neil, the speakers, sponsors, volunteers, and everyone who came along to support Hospice Whanganui at this special community event.

From big ideas and plenty of laughs to meaningful conversations and connection, it was an incredible night to be part of and we’re so grateful to have been chosen as the charity partner.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, an amazing $1630 was raised to support Hospice Whanganui’s patient- and whānau-led care across our region.

We’d also like to give a special thank you to Robi Martin for generously donating the auction item, and to everyone who purchased tickets, shared the event, brought friends along, or helped behind the scenes.

Events like this are a beautiful reminder of the strength, kindness, and support within our community 💛

💛 A huge thank you to Hadfield House at Whanganui Collegiate School 💛

This week, the students of Hadfield House are raising funds for Hospice Whanganui as part of their charity week.

They chose to support Hospice Whanganui because many of the boys have had family members who have been cared for by our team, making this a cause close to their hearts.

Throughout the week, they’ll be fundraising through food sales, raffles, and other activities, with all funds raised helping us continue to provide specialist palliative care for patients and whānau across our community.

We’re so grateful for their support, kindness, and generosity.

There’s a volunteer who helps make hospice care possible.

Most people see our shops.
They browse. They donate. They buy.

But Behind the Counter?

There’s someone giving their time to help support patients and whānau in our community.

Our hospice shops help fund specialist palliative care across Whanganui, and they’re powered by volunteers.

💛 A beautiful story of friendship, volunteering, and community 💛

Thank you to the River City Press for this lovely feature on Yvonne and Jean, who have both dedicated more than 20 years of volunteering with Hospice Whanganui.

Their story is a reminder that hospice care is supported not only by clinical teams, but also by the many volunteers whose time, kindness, and connection help make our community stronger.

Thank you, Yvonne and Jean, for everything you continue to bring to Hospice Whanganui 💛
