Our Story

The Whanganui City College Service Academy was established in 2010 and was headed by Director Blue Davies. Blue served 27 years with the NZ Army and remained the director until December 2018. The Academy had seen many successes amongst the students, including winning the Central Drill competition, Top Student on the Central Advanced Leaders course and winning the Central Adventure Challenge all in 2017.

Blue was later succeeded for a short period by Pat Cooney from January - July 2019, who has since returned to the NZ Army but remains in touch with the Academy, working at the NZDF Youth Development Unit.

The Whanganui City College Service Academy is currently under the direction of Allison Pene who has served 16 years with NZ Army.

Service Academies are an MoE and NZDF led, nationwide secondary school initiative. It is targeted towards Y12 and Y13 students that are at risk of disengaging from learning. Each academy is led by a director who usually comes from a NZDF background. The programme is one year in length and students attend academy classes as well as their normal secondary school subjects throughout the school day.
