Ngā Pakiaka O Manaia - Rescheduled Hui Notice

Mō Ngātiwai, Mā Ngātiwai, Nā Ngātiwai, E ai ki a Ngātiwai – About Ngātiwai, by Ngātiwai, from Ngātiwai.

We want to collectively develop a comprehensive declaration of Mana Rangatiratanga that asserts the self-determination of our hapū and Iwi.

We envisage the declaration will contain a set of principled position statements that encapsulate the essence of Mana Rangatiratanga, Kaitiakitanga, Mana i te Whenua, Tino Rangatiratanga, Mana Motuhake and our position in terms of our mana tuku iho (hereditary authority) as Ngātiwai.

To help guide this work, we invite all uri of Ngātiwai to share their whakaaro through our short survey:

Rescheduled Hui Notice

Due to bad weather and tangi in March and April we had to postpone some of our wananga for this kaupapa. We have now rescheduled those wananga and decided to add an online option for those who may live overseas or just couldn’t make it to one of our in-person events.

Once we collect and consider all the feedback from these remaining wananga we intend to come back out later in the year to present what we have heard and to seek your tautoko on a draft declaration.

📢 Whananaki Marae – will remain OPEN as a Safe Hub

Mōrena e te whānau,
This morning we have been in contact with Civil Defence, who have advised there are ongoing concerns around stronger wind periods expected this afternoon, coinciding with high tide.
There are also multiple flooded roads to and from Whananaki, and conditions may change quickly.
At this stage, Whananaki Marae will remain OPEN as a safe hub for anyone needing shelter, support, or a warm place to stay.
If you or your whānau feel unsafe at home, please come through — you are welcome here.

⚠️ Safety Reminders for Whānau:
• Avoid all unnecessary travel, especially during high tide and strong winds
• Do not drive through floodwaters – it is deeper and faster than it looks
• Stay updated with official Civil Defence warnings and weather alerts
• Secure loose items around your homes to prevent damage in strong winds
• Keep emergency supplies ready (water, food, torches, medications)
• Check in on kaumātua, tamariki, and neighbours

If you need urgent help, please call 111.
Kia tūpato, kia haumaru tātou katoa.

E te whānau,

Due to the approaching cyclone, Whananaki Marae will be open and available as a safe place for anyone in our community who may need shelter or support.

We encourage whānau to come through early if you feel unsafe at home, especially if you are in low-lying or flood-prone areas.

Safety reminders for everyone:
• Stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel
• Secure loose items around your home
• Have emergency supplies ready (water, food, torches, batteries)
• Keep phones charged
• Check in on kaumātua and vulnerable whānau
• Stay updated with official weather warnings

If you are in immediate danger, please call 111.

Let’s look after one another and stay safe.

Ngā manaakitanga,
Whananaki Marae
