This whakataukī was uttered by Tauputaputa, an ancestress of Te Whakatōhea. Her lover, a tohunga was lost at sea and never returned, however a message was sent to her through a sea shell in the form of the whakatauākī.

The principles in the whakatauākī are:-
1. Pursue the path that is right for you or pursue greatness
2. Do not be diverted from that path at all costs
3. If you are diverted let it be by something much greater
if you are or someone you know would be interested in our wānanga, please send an email to [email protected] requesting more information.

This whakatauākī was coined by the late Te Rangi Aniwaniwa John Rangihau in his efforts to remind his people to not forget their homelands. Due to the urban drift, masses of Tūhoe left their home fires to pursue a life of opportunity in the cities. This however saw the decline in tikanga Tūhoe, the Tūhoe way of life. The strategy depicted in this whakatauākī ensures whenua and tangata remain connected so as to reinforce our heritage, our cultural identity.

Key principles from this whakatauākī therefore are;
• The significance of tūrangawaewae as a source of wellbeing and healing
• The role of tuakana in protecting teina
• When there are difficulties and obstacles that confront and challenge you, relief may be found in taking time out, or returning to the source of who you are
• Te Ao Tūroa, the environment, is also a source of healing, cleansing and renewal.
