Reaching out is not a burden. It’s an act of strength.
Unfortunately, abuse of the elderly happens in New Zealand and often goes unreported. But we can all play a part in helping reduce it.
Elder abuse is any act that causes harm to an older person, and are often someone the older person depends on for support or care. This can include:
◼ Psychological abuse
◼ Financial abuse
◼ Physical abuse
◼ Sexual abuse
◼ Neglect of any kind
It can be difficult to identify elder abuse – people may not understand that what’s happening is wrong, or they may be afraid to speak out. For more information visit www.ageconcern.org.nz
If you suspect and an older person is not being treated well or want to report abuse, please call the elder abuse helpline 0800 32 668 65 which is available free 24/7.
If you think someone is in danger, call 111 and ask for Police.
