Hi all,

In an effort to streamline communication in our club here is how this will work going forward:

WhatsApp: We have a new ‘community’ set up for the club. Under this umbrella are many specific groups that will communicate in that space. Please use the link below to join groups that are relevant to you. More will be added as and when needed. This means you will get the information that you need and not have to filter out what isn’t relevant for you. It also means you can see what other groups there are at the club that you might like to be part of. This WhatsApp community is in addition to the Junior Surf one and focused on seniors but there are aspects of it that Junior Surf parents may be interested in so take a look.

Facebook: sharing information and photographs with our whole membership.

Newsletters: monthly or bi monthly - a summary and celebration of that period of time as well as information you need. Will be emailed.

Emails: these will come from Megan our wonderful administrator and may be invoices, entry information or course information specific to you.

Any questions or suggestions are welcome - add them here, email [email protected] or add to a WhatsApp group.

Wednesday mornings swim session with Gary was a busy one! It’s so great to see clubbies from Oceans age right through seniors to Masters taking to a lane and keeping fit over the winter. There’s lanes to suit all ability and fitness levels so get your goggles out and head along for the 6.30am start on Mondays and Wednesday - just tell the office staff you’re there for Surf Club swimming. 🏊‍♂️ 🏊‍♀️ 🏊

OBMC partners with Whakatāne Surf Lifesaving Club to support the First Aid Room at Ōhope Beach!

Ōhope Beach Medical Centre (OBMC) is proud to announce a new community partnership with the Whakatane Surf Lifesaving Club (WSLSC), supporting the Club’s First Aid Room at Ōhope Beach.
For OBMC, this sponsorship is about backing the people who quietly make a huge difference every day, training, patrolling, educating, and responding when the beach needs them most. WSLSC has been part of the fabric of our community for generations, and its work helps keep locals and visitors safe, confident, and connected to the ocean we all treasure.
What makes this partnership especially meaningful is that the idea came from two young locals. When OBMC owners Jasper Heijtel and Dr Marieke Roelofs were discussing how the medical centre could support the community, their children Floris (9) and Sophie (6) were quick to weigh in: “Let’s sponsor surf lifesaving.”
Both Floris and Sophie are active members of WSLSC, and Dr Marieke Roelofs also contributes to the Club as a coach. For the family, WSLSC is not just an organisation they admire, it’s part of their weekly routine, friendships, learning, and community life.
“Floris and Sophie were very clear about it,” says Jasper. “They talked about training days, being on the beach, learning to be safe in the water, and how the lifeguards help people. Their enthusiasm and their sense of ‘this matters’ really stuck with us.”
When Jasper and Marieke shared the idea with the wider OBMC team, the response was immediate. “Everyone was instantly onboard,” Jasper says. “We are a local medical centre and this is our community too. Supporting the Surf Lifesaving Club just made sense.”
The partnership includes an annual cash contribution ring-fenced specifically for First Aid Room consumables and equipment, with WSLSC choosing what to purchase based on what is needed most. Alongside this, OBMC is providing practical, hands-on support to help keep the First Aid Room organised.
“People often think sponsorship is just a logo,” Jasper says. “We wanted this to be practical. If there’s an incident on the beach, having a First Aid Room that is organised and ready to go supports the volunteers and helps the Club respond quickly. This is our way of backing WSLSC in a hands-on way.”
As a fundamental service in Ōhope, OBMC also sees this partnership as part of staying connected and present in the community. The medical centre has recently seen a strong uplift in patient numbers, while remaining focused on access and timely care. “We have worked hard to keep wait times low, so instead of weeks to see a GP or Nurse Practitioner, it’s typically days,” Jasper says. “Because of that, we can also cater for casual patients. If you’re finding it takes weeks to see your usual GP, we are happy to see you.” Jasper adds that, to support ongoing growth, an additional GP will be joining the OBMC team in the next couple of months.
“At the heart of this is community,” Jasper says. “We live here, we work here, and our kids are growing up here. Supporting WSLSC is an investment in beach safety, youth development, and the wellbeing of the whole Whakatāne–Ōhope community.”

2026 Prizegiving

Thanks to everyone for making 2026 Club Champs and Prizegiving so fun! It was great to see a huge number of clubbies there.

We will publish all award winners in a newsletter soon, but there are a group of Oceans athletes who are award winners that we want to share some information about as to why they were awarded some special awards. These athletes also received a $100 Prezzy card each, courtesy of one of our club families and sponsors - Joel and Faye from Xileit, a generous gift that was extremely well received!

It’s a novel so grab a drink and read on!

Most Improved Intermediates (U11–12)
Equal - Lily Williams & Jackson Mounsey

Lily Williams
Lily began the season new to board paddling and ocean swimming, but with determination and coaching from Simon she has grown in both confidence and skill. She now charges into the surf in all conditions and always does it with a smile. Most Improved is a well-deserved honour — well done Lily!

Jackson Mounsey
Jackson has always brought great enthusiasm, and this season that energy translated into hard work, new skills and improved fitness. His dedication paid off with strong results, powering through the surf to reach semifinals and finals. Keep it up Jackson — effort and progress go hand in hand.

Most Dedicated Intermediate (U11–12)
Angus Bain
Angus has shown real dedication this season, both in training and competition. Often biking to and from the club with his mate Keiran, he always arrived ready to give his best. His hard work in the surf paid off with fantastic results across the season, including a bronze medal in his first ever race at Oceans! Congratulations Angus!

Top Intermediate Girl
Riley Miskell
Riley’s achievements this season were impressive — 3rd overall at BOP Champs and a silver medal in the board race at Oceans. But what stands out just as much is her determination to push herself, whether chasing training goals such as working to beat one of her mates Archie, or powering through events like the brick carry at Pool Champs when the brick is nearly half her weight. Though she be little, she is fierce!

Top Intermediate Boy
Gus Fletcher
Gus brings incredible energy to every sport he plays — from swimming and surfing to rugby, cricket and touch. That commitment shows in surf lifesaving, where he handles big competitions like Oceans with strength and stamina. Winning three medals at Oceans is a truly outstanding achievement. Congratulations Gus!

Most Improved Rookie (U13–14)
Ivy Stephens
Ivy has shown determination in training and competition for years, and this season her improvement really shone. Ivy came tantalisingly close to an Oceans medal with 6th place in the 2km beach relay this year, watch out 2027 2km relay! Confident and capable in the surf — her second home — she also supports younger members with her caring nature. Ivy is exactly the kind of club member who will continue to make a difference.

Most Dedicated Rookie (U13–14)
Ted Toogood
Ted has brought huge enthusiasm since joining the club last season. Always ready to learn at rookie sessions, he is clearly committed to developing his pathway toward becoming a lifeguard and IRB driver. Combined with his strong ability in the water, Ted has a bright future ahead. Well done!

Top Rookie Girl (U13–14)
Piper Rowland
Piper has worked consistently all season to be the best she can be, giving her all at training and competitions. Her dedication paid off with a top finish at Pukehina’s Harris Cup event and lots of great performances at Oceans semi finals. Well done Piper!

Top Rookie Boy (U13–14)
Equal: Liam Lawrence & Archie Thompson

Liam Lawrence
Liam is quick in the water and even quicker on the sand. Winning gold in Beach Flags at Oceans was an incredible achievement, building on his 3rd overall placing at BOP Champs earlier in the season. With his drive and speed, Liam has a very exciting future ahead. Congratulations Liam.

Archie Thompson
Archie spends as much time in the water as possible — before school, at training, and surfing with mates, a waterman through and through. He trains hard, pushes himself every session and thrives on competition. His commitment throughout the season paid off with strong performances at Pool Champs, BOP Champs, Pukehina and Oceans. Well done Archie.
