It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Kay Ritchie, a much-loved member of the Ōhope Indoor Bowls Club. We extend our sincere condolences to Kaye’s family and friends and will remember her fondly. Funeral details to follow

Hunt Retains Triples Crown
Gary Hunt and his team of Raewyn Clark and Glenys Guest from the Ohope Club retained the Whakatane Association Triples Title they won last year when the defeated the Edgecumbe team of Maureen Harris, Shelley Forster and Jennifer Johnson 7 - 5 in a close fought final
5 very even teams including 2 Junior players contested the event and after the round robin qualifying session which included 2 drawn games, 3 teams had gained the required 5 points to qualify.
Hunt drew the bye and Maureen Harris's team played Dyklan Greyvenstein, Ian Oates and David Hamill. This game went down to the wire with Maureen drawing the shot with her last bowl to secure the win. Congratulations to all

Hi all it's that time of year where we are all coming to the end of the season an the hams an Xmas tournaments start with that been said the Whakatane Association have their hams tournament coming up on the 17th of October with hams for 1st an 2nd so get your entries in.. Whakatane Junior Singles

This Sunday saw 6 keen Junior Indoor bowlers contest the Whakatane Indoor Bowls Association Junior Singles at the Bridge Street Stadium. After 4 games of excellent bowling 3 players had won 2 1/2 or more games to qualify. Karina Yoshihara drew the bye leaving Andre Walker and William Grant to play off for a place in the final. After a tight game it was 6 - 4 to William after 8 ends and he gained a further shot on the last end to win 7 - 4.
The final was again a close game but William played an awesome upshot on the 8th end when 3 down to get the shot. This put him 8 - 5 ahead on the last end and Karina was only able to get 1 shot so William gained the win 8 - 6 to be the Whakatane Assn Junior Singles Champion for 2026.

Sunday the 6th of September saw the HBL fours been played in Whakatane with 12 teams entered from various places around the country..With a unusual amount of qualifiers 7 in fact meaning 6 played an 1 got the bye .Kevin Boothby got the bye into the semis where he played Shane Patchett an in the other semi was Mike Phipps against Warren Gibb with the visitors dominating again..Team Phipps proved too strong for team Gibb in their semi an in the other semi in a tight game been 5/4 to Boothby with 1 end to go.. Shane played a good bowl to get 1 to make 5/5 extra end with Boothby winning the extra end to make the final for the second time in two days..Team Boothy got off to a good start but Phipps team were making a come back but with 4 shot the difference going into the last end team Boothby held on to be the winners for 2026..( K Boothby,T Jones,P Jones,G Boothby ) Runners-up ( M Phipps,A Syben,F Keegan,D Theobold ) 3rd= ( W Gibb,M Gerrand,D Tipene,S Groves ) ( S Patchett,P Curd, P Daiskey,S Curd )... Saturday the 5th of September saw the McGillan Memorial Pairs with 24 teams from all parts of the country saw 10 teams qualify which meant 6 got the bye and 4 play to make it down to 8.. Going to the semi finals it was all the away teams playing they were team Ramaekers playing team Boothy an the other semi was between team McDonald an Patchetts..In the game of husbands and wife's team boothy can out tops in a game that see sawed almost every end and the other semi McDonald got off to a good start but team Patchetts fought hard to bring themselves back into the game but McDonald held on to win their way to the final..The final between ( Kevin an Gail Boothby ) an ( Brian McDonald an Jason Parker ) team McDonald got off to a strong start but on the 5th end Kevin played a superb bowl to pick up 4 an keep their hopes a live with the score been 7/4 to McDonald after 5 ends.. McDonald pick up a one to make it 8/4 then Boothby got 2 making it 8/6 With two ends to go there was only two points between them Kevin played a good bowl to sit 1 maybe 2 shots but McDonald played a just as good a bowl to move kitty for 2 shots to take a 4 point lead into the last end.. Whakatane does well in BOP Championship in 2026

With BOP Championships now complete for 2026 Whakatane Clubs have topped the Geyser Trophy for Top Club and also the TOP Player.
In the Geyser Trophy Ohope was 1st with a massive 98 points and Edgecumbe coming second on 54 Points
In the Top Player Trophy Ohope's Tony Reynolds came out on Top with 44 points narrowly ahead of Gary Hunt also from Ohope and Jacque Porter from Lake Taupo on 42 points

Whakatane Junior Indoor Bowls

Wednesday 19th August saw the Whakatane Junior Indoor Bowlers play a Singles Mini Tournament at the Whakatane Indoor Bowls Stadium in Bridge St.
3 games of 5 ends were played and after very close games and some great bowls Karina Yoshihara came out on top as the only 3 winner but closely followed by William Grant with 2 wins and a draw.
As usual the day ended with the $5 challenge with 2 bowlers, Scott Grant (twice) and Stephan Saayman landing on the $5 note keeping the money.

Sunday the 16th of August saw the second champ of champs event been played which was the champ of champ pairs.. 8 clubs entered two teams qualified they were team Taupo Robin an Jacque Porter an team Ohope Dylan Greyvenstein an Gary McMillan.. With only two teams qualified it was straight into the final team.. Ohope got off to a good start but team Taupo keeped fighting to be only a few shots behind but team Ohope picked two shots on the second to last end to go 4 shots up playing the last end.. 2026 winner team Ohope Dylan Greyvenstein Gary McMillan.. Also congratulations to Tony Reynolds who with his win yesterday in the last Bay championship of the year saw he take top honors in the player of the year in a closely contested field
