Mā te ngaruru ō ngā whenua maru ō Ngāti Awa, ka noho momoho ngā taonga koiora, taonga tuku iho, hei oranga whānui mō ngā whakatipuranga. As the lands of Ngāti Awa flourish, opportunities abound for future generations to enjoy their ecological, environmental, and cultural uniqueness. Korehāhā Whakahau is the first Iwi-led Predator Free 2050 project administered by Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa in partners

hip with Predator Free 2050 and Te Papa Atawhai (DoC), seeking to eradicate possums from 4,700ha of land within the rohe of Ngāti Awa, including Whakatāne, Ōhope, and Ōhiwa Harbour. Over a five-year period the project will contribute to the protection and enhancement of te taiao, creating career pathways that build the capacity and capability of Ngāti Awa to be kaitiaki on our whenua. Korehāhā Whakahau is an innovative and aspirational project, seeking to achieve social, cultural, environmental, and economic outcomes in our community through job creation with kaitiakitanga at the centre.

Koro Hirini dedicated his life to the preservation and advancement of te reo Māori, tikanga Māori, and mātauranga Māori, ensuring future generations would continue to benefit from the knowledge, values, and traditions of our tīpuna.

His work has influenced countless people, organisations, and kaupapa throughout Aotearoa, including those working to protect and restore our taiao through a Māori world lens. His teachings continue to guide how we understand our responsibilities as kaitiaki and how we uphold the mana of our people, our culture, and our taiao.

At Korehāhā Whakahau, we recognise the lasting impact of his teachings, which continue to shape the way we approach kaitiakitanga and our relationship with te taiao.

A big warm welcome to our two newest kaimahi, Taoitekura Eruera (Te Pahīpoto) and Hone Walker (Ngāi Taiwhakāea), who have recently joined the Korehāhā Whakahau team 🌿

From day one, both Taoitekura and Hone have transitioned into the team effortlessly, bringing a strong work ethic, positive attitudes, and a shared passion for the taiao. They’ve wasted no time getting stuck into the mahi and have already achieved their Basic Chainsaw Ticket, Grow Safe and 4WD certifications 👏

Their willingness to learn, support the team, and get hands-on in all aspects of our kaupapa has been awesome to see. We’re excited to continue growing alongside them as they build their skills and contribute to the important mahi happening across our rohe.

Awesome to have you both on board and part of the kaupapa 💚

A huge congratulations to our four Korehāhā Whakahau kaimahi who recently graduated from Te Aka Pūtaiao Kaupae 5 (Environmental Studies Level 5) at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi 🎓🌿
This achievement reflects the continued growth of capability, leadership, and mātauranga within our Ngāti Awa uri. Investing in our people strengthens not only Korehāhā Whakahau, but also the future of our taiao mahi and the ability for our uri to lead this kaupapa for generations to come. 🌱
A special thank you to our kaiako Lanae Cable for the guidance, support, and knowledge shared throughout this journey. Your commitment to uplifting our uri through education and kaupapa Māori learning spaces is deeply appreciated.
We also extend our congratulations to all graduates who celebrated this milestone alongside our kaimahi across the many kaupapa and programmes at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi. What an awesome achievement for everyone involved.
We are incredibly proud of our kaimahi and the dedication they have shown balancing mahi, whānau, and study commitments. This is another step forward in building strong pathways for Ngāti Awa within te taiao, conservation, and kaitiakitanga.

He wā whakahirahira mō tō mātou whānau Korehāhā Whakahau 👏🏽
Today, our Kaiarahi carried out his very first wero for the Awanuiārangi Graduation pōhiri, ahead of tomorrow’s graduation. A powerful moment that reflects courage, growth, and commitment to tikanga.
Apōpō is just as special, with him and several of our Korehāhā Whakahau whānau graduating after completing Te Aka Pūtaiao (Environmental Studies) 🌱

🪓 Whakahau would like to acknowledge and thank Horizon for their support through the funding of AT520-AI traps, locally manufactured in Whakatāne by AutoTraps 🙌🏽

🤖 The AT520-AI is an automatically resetting and re-luring multispecies pest trap, using AI technology for species-specific arming and Yarn Mesh connectivity. This investment has been a significant step forward for our kaupapa, supporting the upskilling of our kaimahi in new technology systems and strengthening our overall trapping capability on the whenua

📲 As part of this mahi, the team has been learning to operate Yarn Mesh, which enables real-time monitoring, data collection, and smarter decision-making across our trapping networks

👉🏽 While our primary focus remains the eradication of possums, the AT520-AI system allows us to extend our trapping networks to also target mustelids, rats, and feral cats outside of urban areas, with the ability to select which pest species the traps are armed to catch

👉🏽 These AI-enabled traps also allow us to intensify our defensive lines and use the technology as both an active trapping and monitoring tool, strengthening protection for our ngahere and taiao

🫱🏽‍🫲🏽 Support like this enables iwi-led kaupapa to grow capability, adapt to new challenges, and apply innovative tools in ways that continue to centre mātauranga Māori and kaitiakitanga 🙏🏽

🔙 Last year we met with 👝 and Horizon ⚡️ to report our pest eradication mahi and outline the next phase of the project

This includes
👉🏽 strengthening the skills of our kaimahi
👉🏽 introducing practical tools such as AI-enabled traps to improve efficiency and results on the ground
👉🏽 the long-term sustainability of the project

👝 is one of our staunch supporters and through their resource support in the past Korehāhā Whakau have been able to extend the timeframe of our mahi ➡️

🎉 We’re stoked to announce that Bay Trust have granted the project a multi-year grant of $525,000.0 to extend this mahi into the future. This funding provides stability and allows us to grow capability, retain and extrapolate learnings, and ensure Ngāti Awa remain active kaitiaki of our whenua 💪🏾

ℹ️ We also acknowledge those who established this relationship in the beginning. Their foresight and groundwork built a partnership that continues to deliver tangible outcomes for our environment and our people 🙏🏽
