Motu Kōkako

Motu Kōkako Motu Kōkako the island of Ngāpuhi. Always has been, always will be, Māori land.

Motu Kōkako is a special place and we welcome manuhiri to share in experiencing our Island which is of deep cultural and spiritual significance to our people. Motu Kōkako has become a tourism icon within the Bay of Islands and Aotearoa and a boat trip to and through the Island is widely recognised as a 'must do' for visitors to the Bay. While the Trustees allow private users to respectfully traver

se the water ways that run below our island, we have requested that commercial boat tour operators refrain from exploiting our Motu for commercial gain without either the agreement of the owners or access to the mandated kōrero / cultural narratives for the Motu. While from 1988 to 1990 the Trust had a cultural and commercial agreement with Fullers, from that time onward the boat tour companies have continued to operate within and around Motu Kōkako without the blessing of the owners. The Trustees continue to seek redress on these issues from both the boat tour operators and the Crown and have lodged the Wai 2022 Treaty claim which was heard by the Waitangi Tribunal in May 2013. The Trust are optimistic of legislation arising from Wai 2022 which will allow us to fully exercise our Kaitiaki (guardianship) roles and allow us to develop appropriate cultural and commercial agreements with tour operators. Such agreements will enable us to fulfil our kaitiaki roles, including protecting and enhancing the ecosystem on the island and working to create opportunities for our people.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2026 SCHOLARS
Motu Kōkako Ahu Whenua Trust is delighted to announce our scholarship recipients for 2026. This year we awarded all fifteen applicants financial support for their studies, to a total of $22,000. This was one of those years where the standard was so high that we increased the budget by $10,000 to be able to fund everybody.
GIving back to shareholders is a priority for the Trust, and we have witnessed the difference that support can make. We wish our scholars all the best for their studies this year.
E ai ki te whakataukī "Ko te manu e kai ana i te miro, nōna te ngahere. Ko te manu e kai ana i te mātauranga, nōnā te ao".
The bird who feasts on the miro berry, theirs is the forest. The bird who feasts on knowledge, theirs is the world.
The list of scholars is the last photo.

Cyclone Tam - kia noho haumaru tātou mā 🙏

A busy day at Te Rāwhiti Marae as whānau deployed the emergency response on the second day with no power. Our Ecoflow portable power station was the perfect unit to help whānau charge their devices with multiple ports and outlets. We bought the ecoflow for use on our biodiversity surveys but it is good to be able to awhi when needed 🤗

Ngā mihi to Kohu Hakaraia, one of our 2025 Motu Kōkako Scholars. Kohu was busy with an assignment so couldn't make the hui-a-tau. However, she took some time out to share this kōrero about her learning journey 🖤🤍❤️

Thank you to the whānau who came to tautoko our AGM yesterday, to the taumata led by Te Ra Nehua, the team from Whakapara marae for their manaakitanga Te Pora mā and the cooks led by Jeannie Poutai for their reka kai 🙏🏼
A special mihi to Twilight and Te Kauwhata, two of our 2024 scholars who shared their respective haerenga to become a pilot and a lawyer.
