I really enjoy live music. On Wednesday, the Kōwhai Connection group were treated to wonderful live piano playing - it echoed beautifully through Te Rangimarie. So I am delighted to share this upcoming live music event - it will be at St Andrew's Church on Sunday 15th November - entry is koha. ❤

An awesome audience appreciated the wonderful performance by the New Zealand Doctors' Orchestra (NZDO).

Thank you to everyone involved with the New Zealand Doctors’ Orchestra, for an outstanding $9,091.60 raised for Te Kahu Pairuri Hospice Taranaki.

We are incredibly grateful for your continued support of Hospice and for bringing the orchestra back to Taranaki. The generosity of the musicians – giving their time and talent, covering their own travel costs and raising funds for Hospice – makes this support particularly special.

There is also something very meaningful about doctors coming together to support Hospice. It is a wonderful endorsement of the care we provide and the difference specialist palliative care makes for people and whānau in each community.

Your donation will help us continue to provide our services free of charge to the more than 620 people and their whānau we care for each year. It costs more than $5 million locally each year to provide this care, with community generosity making it possible for us to continue to be there for people when they need us most.

Kupu o te rā | Word of the Day
RANGIMARIE: Peaceful. Quiet. Calm.
Rangimarie is a fitting word for our Hospice hub and inpatient unit, Te Rangimarie.

People often tell us, when they visit, how calm and peaceful it feels here. Perhaps it’s the gentle surroundings, the care of our team, or simply the way people are welcomed and supported.

Whatever it is, that sense of rangimarie matters.

Te Rangimarie is a place where patients and whānau can feel cared for, supported and at ease — surrounded by people who are there to help.

And that’s what we hope every person who comes through our doors experiences.

Te Rangimarie — a place of peace, calm and care.

Kupu o te Rā | Word of the Day
KŌWHAI
The beautiful kōwhai flower is a familiar sight around Aotearoa, and kōwhai has a special place in our Hospice story.
The flower and bark have traditionally been used in rongoā Māori, with healing properties associated with the plant. It is for this reason, along with its natural beauty and symbolism, that we chose the kōwhai flower as part of our Te Kahu Pairuri Hospice Taranaki logo.
And now, kōwhai has another special meaning for us.
Our Day Programme has recently been renamed Kōwhai Connection — a place for people receiving regular care from our team to come together, enjoy activities and, importantly, connect with others.
Yesterday, our Kōwhai Connection members enjoyed the board game of Kaupapa, with a little te reo Māori naturally woven into the activity. Everyone took turns to mime a word while the others guessed. There was plenty of laughter and lots of encouragement along the way!
It was a lovely example of how te reo Māori can be part of what we do every day — naturally, together and with a little fun.

We’re delighted to welcome the New Zealand Doctors’ Orchestra back to Taranaki this Sunday, with two Taranaki Base Hospital medics joining the 84-strong orchestra for this very special performance.
It’s wonderful to see Sarah de Vries and Dr Anne Yu swapping their medical roles for their instruments and helping raise funds for Te Kahu Pairuri Hospice Taranaki.

Melodic medics raise money for Hospice

Two Taranaki Base Hospital medics are swapping stethoscopes for sheet music as part of the 84-strong New Zealand Doctors’ Orchestra performance raising money for Taranaki Hospice.

Performing pieces by Wagner, Beethoven and Strauss from 2pm this Sunday, September 20 at the TSB Showplace, Taranaki Base Hospital’s fifth year medical student Sarah de Vries and Obstetrics and Gynaecology Consultant, Dr Anne Yu will have just two days practice with the orchestra before the concert.

With Anne a violinist, and Sarah a clarinettist, both are Grade 8 level musicians having started playing their instruments as young children and have been playing in school, youth and local orchestras since their teens.

Both received the music scores for this Sunday’s performance more than a month ago and have been practising solo, says Anne.

“They are beloved pieces in the repertoire,” says Anne. “There’s been lots of home practice getting ready to match the high level of musical ability the other members bring to the orchestra.”

For Sarah, this will be her first performance with this orchestra.

“I’ve heard the conductor, José, is really good at bringing the orchestra together,” Sarah says. “Joining local orchestras has always been a great way to join in a local community and I’m looking forward to meeting other members of the orchestra coming in from all over the country.”

Beginning in 2012, and performing just once a year, this will be the orchestra’s 14th fund-raising performance. With the melodic medics paying to join the orchestra, their own travel costs, the venue hire fee and the fee for conductor José Aparicio, the orchestra has so far raised more than $82,000 for hospices nationwide as all proceeds from this concert’s ticket sales will go to Hospice Taranaki.
