13 Local students enjoyed the 2 day Blue Light Fishing Training program during the second week of the term school holidays. The willingness of so many local people and community organisations who volunteer to ensure our youth have positive and memorable experiences is always encouraging says Blue Light organiser Shane Gould . Ron Lucca, Duncan McKenzie, Brett crew from Mangawhai Coastguard, Dave Parker Honoury MPI Fishing Officer , Grant Dixon Marine Writer,& Coastguard, Pip Beavan, Dave Thomas, members of Mangawhai Boating and Fishing Club, Darryl Reardon, Kristal Gould Blue Light volunteers and Julie Scott Campbell Park Manager for our lunches . Wellsford RRT for snack Packs. The students enjoyed a perfect winter weather and marine day out on Bay Fishing Charters vessel fishing in Bream Bay and brought home some nice fish. A big thank you to the Auckland Council Rodney Area board and Rodney Youth project who sponsored the event to enable Wellsford area Youth to enjoy this training and experience

The first week of school holidays 4 local youth particiated in our Blue Light Leadership Voyage. 17 Students as far away as Invercargill, Christchurch, Hawkes Bay, Tauranga ,Auckland and our area soon became a team. The Steinlager 2 boat famous for Round the World Yachting races and operated by the NZ Sailing Trust provided a fantastic resource in team building and individual personal growth and leadership experiences. Local Blue Light Community Youth Coordinator Shane Gould particpated as well and was impressed with crew from the NZ Sailing Trust that navigated us to some wonderful places around the Hauraki Gulf. Several stop overs for beach exploration, Cultural and historical places, team building games and some clean up were conducted. Another memorable experience for our emerging youth.

Another great start to the year of activities and opportunities for our youth. Our awesome volunteers and Police staff who bring their talents and experiences to share with youth in a variety of activities that have included:- Kayaking, sand duning, Lifeskills courses, Onwards Upwards program, Archery, Air Rifles, raft building, Stand Up Paddle boards, White Water Rafting. Coming up in the next few weeks are a Lifeskills Course, Leadership Voyage and a Fishing Training program. Thanks to our local sponsors, New Zealand Blue Light and Blue Light Whangārei for volunteers and their camp and training facilities. Venues include Marsden Bay Christian Camp, Blue Light Awhitu Camp, Whenuapai Air Base, Wellsford School.

So far the 2026 year activities have involved students from Rodney College, Otamatea High School and this week Glenbervie Primary School. The branch Coordinator was assisted by volunteers from the branch Darryl Reardon, Neil Wright, Terry Gillgooly and Hayleigh Schimmmel from Blue Light Whangārei.
The next few weeks we have Dargaville, Glendowie College, Dairy Flat, Kaukapakapa, Warkworth Primary Schools.

The 2026 Blue Light Lifeskills Course at the Whenuapai Airbase was again a real success for 7 local students from Rodney College, Otamatea High school and a home schooler. A wide range of team building, Lifeskills, Goal setting, drill, PT, off site White Water rafting, Air base visits and a graduation parade of some very proud parents.
