Compulsory viewing required by all. Thank you for honouring our q***r histories and don’t forget the people from the past and present who fought for our Rainbow Voices to be heard in all their diversity and splendour!

Happy Q***r History Month Pūmahara Ia Te Wā! This initiative was cemented by Kawe Mahara Q***r Archives Aotearoa last year as the first ever iteration in Aotearoa, offering us all opportunities to seek affirmation through memories and to bathe in the archival euphoria and in remembrance.

As Rosanna Raymond and Pounamu Rurawhe embodied through their 2024 𝘛𝘦 𝘛ī𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘢 residency, we delineated the importance of tracing back knowledge, of being on a journey of remembering our shared connections as Pacific people, and of the relations we share with our atua, ariki, environments and to each other.

For this year’s Pūmahara Ia Te Wā, we are hoping to highlight the taonga that (re)tell the stories of our whakapapa as Takatāpui and Rainbow people, to cite our tīpuna and honour their shared memories, and to showcase the strength and the ongoing work that our communities are still doing. Join us as we dive deep into the footnotes of our collective thoughts and continue preserving our ephemeral knowledge. ***rhistorymonthaotearoa

Welcome to JULY - Q***r History Month Aotearoa Pūmahara Ia Te Wā! The month is led by Kawe Mahara Q***r Archives Aotearoa and full of a delicious variety of Q***r History events around the country. As part of the celebrations, PrideNZ has teamed up with Walk Tours NZ to record a series of podcasts about how to go about creating a LGBTQIA+ Rainbow walk tour!

The first episode is available now - https://www.pridenz.com/out_on_these_streets.html

Roger Smith, co-founder of Walk Tours NZ, said, “For the last eight years, we’ve run over 100 free community walk tours highlighting Wellington’s rich Rainbow heritage. The new podcast series is a great way to capture what we’ve learnt and to encourage others to give it a go and create their own tours.” Smith continues, “We weren’t professional historians or seasoned guides when we began – but we had passion and energy, and we’d been inspired by earlier walk tours run by Hugh Young and Dr Alison Laurie.”

Founder of PrideNZ and co-founder of Walk Tours NZ, Gareth Watkins, adds, “I’m reminded of a placard held high during this year’s Wellington Pride Parade: ‘Hate is not our Destiny.’ I think everyone has a responsibility to create and nurture the type of society we want to live in. For Walk Tours NZ, that’s about creating spaces where we can celebrate, honour, and uphold the mana of our Rainbow whakapapa.”

Celebrate Q***r History Month with us this July!

Kawe Mahara are encouraging any groups throughout Aotearoa who want to take part in this year’s Q***r History Month to organise an event and let us know about it, so we can add it to the Q***r History Month calendar that we’re curating.

🌈🗂️📀📚🎉🧸

The calendar will be shared on social media, so that people can view a list of what's on around the country in one place.

Your event doesn’t have to be flashy or complicated to be included! Even if your event is as simple as a gathering to reflect on those who have come before us, or watching one of the amazing free q***r films on , we heartily welcome your event to our calendar!
