Aotearoa New Zealand sits on one of the most geologically active patches of land on Earth - and that's what makes it extraordinary.

In this talk, Alex Thomas-Long - Earth Sciences New Zealand Analyst and Shift Leader at New Zealand's National Geohazards Monitoring Centre - pulls back the curtain on the forces constantly reshaping our landscape. With a BSc in Geology and over seven years of hands-on experience, Alex brings the technical and human side of geohazard monitoring to life.

We'll explore how scientists track earthquakes, volcanic activity, tsunamis and landslides in real time, what happens behind the scenes when a big one hits, and how this work helps build resilience for the people of Aotearoa.

Sport shapes our culture — but who really controls it?

We often talk about gender disparities in sport, from pay gaps to media coverage. But the deeper story is structural. Modern sport was built through boys’ clubs and long-standing male networks — a head start that continues to shape who holds power, influence, and sponsorship today.

In this thought-provoking lecture, Erin Roxburgh unpacks how the money really moves — and explores how redesigning funding systems could unlock something bigger for the next generation of girls.

Erin is a management lecturer at Te Herenga Waka — Victoria University of Wellington, and a governance practitioner specialising in sport leadership and equity.

Join us for an engaging and timely conversation about power, systems, and the future of women’s sport.

When you see caricatures of politicians or celebrities, it’s often instantly recognisable — even when their features are wildly exaggerated. So how does a caricaturist capture someone’s likeness while bending reality so far?

In this lecture, writer, director, and artist Charlie Faulks explores how caricatures are built: breaking down the mechanics of likeness, exaggeration, and visual shorthand. Through examples of well-known politicians and celebrities alongside their caricature counterparts, Charlie reveals how artists decide what to exaggerate — and why it works. Watch Charlie demonstrate these ideas in real time as he draws caricatures live!
