Special Olympics Kapiti

Special Olympics Kapiti Special Olympics New Zealand offers a year round programme of sports training and competition for children and adults with an intellectual disability.

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with an intellectual disability, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Our Vision

Our vision is to build the programmes offered by Special Olympics New Zealand so that every person with a learning disability has the opportunity, in their local community, to participate in high quality sport and development activities that bring life-changing experiences of increased skills, self-confidence and joy. Our History

Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the Special Olympics movement has grown from a few hundred athletes to more than 3.7 million athletes in over 170 countries in all regions of the world, providing year-round sports training, athletic competition and other related programs.

Big feelings? Yeah, we get it. Let's navigate them together.

Sometimes frustration, overwhelm, or stress creeps in—when we're trying something new, heading somewhere unfamiliar, or just living life. Sound familiar?

This Mental Health Awareness Week, Special Olympics New Zealand is hosting a FREE webinar with Educational Psychologist Cathy Robson to help you:

- Recognise big feelings in yourself and others
- Understand what's happening in your brain and body
- Respond with practical tools (mindfulness, calming techniques, reframing)
- Connect—because belonging matters

This is for everyone: People with intellectual disabilities, family, coaches, volunteers, and supporters. You're all welcome.

🏊‍♀️ WE’RE LOOKING FOR AN ASSISTANT SWIMMING COACH! 🏊‍♂️

Special Olympics Kāpiti is looking for a volunteer Assistant Swimming Coach to join our team.

Kāpiti Aquatic Centre
Sunday evenings
5.00pm – 6.00pm

We’re looking for someone who:

• Is a current or former swimmer and understands the mechanics and technique of swimming
• Is patient, encouraging and understanding
• Enjoys working with people with intellectual disabilities
• Is happy to learn and work alongside our existing coaching team
• Most importantly, wants to help our athletes enjoy swimming and reach their potential

You don’t need to be an experienced coach. If you know your swimming techniques, your freestyle to butterfly, and have the right attitude, we can help you develop the coaching side.

And honestly, volunteering with Special Olympics is one of those things where you often get just as much out of it as the athletes do — if not more.

Seeing someone master a new skill, gain confidence, achieve a goal or simply have a great time in the pool makes it incredibly rewarding.

If you think this could be you — or you know someone who would be perfect for the role — we’d love to hear from you. Please pm us

Please share this post with anyone who might be interested.

LET’S GET BEHIND PARAPARAUMU COLLEGE!

We are incredibly proud to share that our amazing friends at Paraparaumu College have entered a beautiful documentary into the Focus on Ability Short Film Festival — and we’d LOVE your help to get it across the line!

The film, “The Greatest Show – Inclusive Dance on the National Stage”, captures the incredible collaborative dance project from last year and, more importantly, shows the power of inclusion, friendship and believing that everyone has a place on the stage.

It’s a wonderful story of what can happen when a community comes together and inclusion isn’t just something we talk about — it’s something we do.

And now they need your vote!

Voting is quick and easy:

And please share this post and the film with your friends, family and anyone who believes in the power of inclusion. Every vote and every share helps!

A huge congratulations to Debbie Cowens for creating such a beautiful documentary, and to everyone at Paraparaumu College who helped make this incredible project happen.

From all of us at Special Olympics Kapiti — we’re cheering you on!
