Youth Work 101 Workshop:
This is a wānanga for new kaimahi taiohi to grow skills, confidence, and cultural grounding.
This wānanga is designed to support kaimahi taiohi (youth workers) in Aotearoa to strengthen their understanding of the key foundations of youth work within our unique cultural context. It will be an interactive and practical workshop, facilitated by Russell Hockley, covering:

Understanding Youth Work in Aotearoa?

Whanaungatanga – Building trust through genuine relationships

Safe and Ethical practice – Providing boundaries to protect the mauri of the taiohi

Youth-Centred Engagement - How Youth voices shape our mahi

Programme and Facilitation Skills – Providing safe, adaptable and inclusive spaces

My name is Russell Hockley. I am of Taranaki, Ngāpuhi, Te Aupōuri, and Ngāti Porou descent. I’m a father of nine, and have been with my beautiful wife for over 21 years. I have been working in the youth space for over 17 years – from coaching my kids’ sports teams to working alongside young people in our community. I am passionate about supporting our youth workers to grow, be strong, and be confident.

Games & Youth Engagement Workshop
Come play with some toys! – and then work out why. This interactive workshop will fuse ABL and Youth Participation frameworks to find fresh perspectives on familiar practices. Often, when we ask young people why they’re involved in something, they’ll reply with “fun, friends, and food” and then maybe something that we think is “more substantial”. How can we ensure that every element of our programmes include an intentional engagement edge? We’ll explore the concepts of meaning, control and connectedness in an applicable sense. You’ll take away some cool research links and maybe a new game or two.

Rod is an Accredited Member of Korowai Tupu. Rod likes to balance theory and practice and has qualifications that reflect his vocational explorations: a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Theatre and Education (Victoria University of Wellington), a Post Graduate Diploma in Social Service Supervision with Distinction (Massey University) and a Diploma in Youth Work (Otago Polytechnic).

If registering for this workshop it is required participants are able to attend the full day training on Thursday 19th November 2026 from 9am to 4pm in Taranaki.

Wellington Regional Youth Workers Trust are pleased to offer places on the RAP 2-day Workshop on Thursday 5th and Friday 6th November 2026 in Waipukurau. This workshop will be facilitated by Lloyd Martin.

RAP Workshop Details:
This is an interactive 2-day course for those seeking to connect with and respond to the needs of young people, especially those who are struggling.

Responding to needs rather than reacting to problems - The RAP workshop is a practical application of the Circle of Mana - a culturally responsive and strengths-based framework for working with young people. This two-day interactive workshop is relevant for whānau, mentors and professionals, educators, social workers who are seeking to connect with and respond to the needs of young people, especially those who are struggling. You will go away with principles and practical approaches that you can begin applying immediately (this stuff works with your own kids too!).

Lloyd’s specialist areas are the Circle of Mana and alternative education. He has a doctorate in youth development research through Victoria University. Lloyd’s style of teaching resonates with Māori and Pacific cultural contexts. He uses practical and interactive approaches in his teaching (having spent his whole life working with people with short attention spans!).

Strategies for Challenging Behaviours Workshop:
The objectives of this workshop are:
- To increase the skills of youth workers struggling with challenging behaviour from young people
- To reduce the prevalence of destructive and defiant behaviour exhibited by young people in youth work contexts, so they can adopt positive behaviours and transfer other environments such as school and home, strengthening whanau relationships
- To offer new strategies for preventing challenging behaviour and creating positive peer cultures that care
- To embed relevant research, theory and a rich evidence base within conscious youth work practice
- To create opportunities for youth workers to share real stories and stress from their mahi with each other in a safe and confidential workshop environment
- To strengthen networks with other youth workers.
