7 of us mounted our mighty steel steeds and headed out for a quick jaunt over the Akatarawas heading for Waikanae.

It was early in the morning (ish) and some sections of the road had yet to see the sun this year, while other corners, all you could see was sun :)

While not overly technical, it did require some finessing on some of the downhill-right-hand-off-camber-slippery-hair-pins with an unusual amount of traffic coming the other way (most of whom for one reason or another were reluctant to move over a bit to the left).

There was also water going across the road, random piles of gravel on your line in corners, fine layers of pine needles, bright sunlight competing against dark shadows playing tricks on your view of the road ahead. All in all though, it was a good ride and allowed us to practice a lot of different skills.

Once we hit Waikanae, we set up some cut tennis balls and did a slow race. Best time over 15 metres was Edward in a final show down with Colin doing it in 41.5 seconds to claim the prize. We were about to do some figure 8's as well, and I was running around the carpark flapping my arms showing the route, and found we had a young audience :). Toddler came over with mum and chatted to the guys, looked at the bikes, a little bit of oohing and aahing, but reluctant to actually sit on one of the BMW giants. At that point we decided it was better to go do a figure 8 around a cup of coffee so we revved up and headed to Southwards.

Met up with Sue here, caught up with everyone for a half hour or so then headed home via the Paekakariki hill road. A couple of the likely lads went up ahead to scope it out and make sure the road was in good condition for the rest of us. 'Nuff said.

As planned, it was a short ride, light on fuel, but lots of different conditions to work with. Good weather, good company. Thanks to all that came out to enjoy a morning ride.

Cheers
Stu

It was a real pleasure to be able to present Mark Shakespeare with his advanced pass certificate last week. Mark has shown himself to be a very capable rider with a great attitude towards learning and road safety. Mark is keen to see others benefit from the IAM system as he has, and has volunteered to start training as an observer with the Wellington team. Congratulations, and I look forward to taking you through to that next stage soon. Nick

Congratulations to Alexander Herriott for a great Advanced Test pass today with examiner Carey Griffiths. Alexander has IAM advanced driver and rider certificates from IAM in the UK, and his experience shows. Great to see a DR650 as the test bike too - nothing like a big trailey! Thanks to the Wellington Observer team for helping Alexander get through - Carey

Six of us rolled out from Z Remutaka with the intention of reaching Ngawi. The sun showed off early and drew out just about every rider in the region to do the same thing at the end of this long weekend.

Gaggles of riders were everywhere - waves exchanged, nods given, that unspoken "yep, this is definitely a good day for it" understanding passing between us as we inevitably maxxed out at 30kph over the Remutakas. Not such a bad thing to do for a change as there were lots of old classic british cars heading the other way over to Trentham for their gig, so plenty of eye candy to enjoy.

After a quick zip down Western Lake road, let us not forget that we are in Wellington! Unsurprisingly and right on cue, the weather added a bit of drama just before we hit the Palliser turnoff, with a bit of a southerly hows-ya-father rain and wind deciding to join the ride just to keep things interesting.

We didn't quite make it to Ngawi for various reasons, before deciding to turn and head to Lake Ferry hotel for lunch. Carol did decide to carry on to Ngawi, so our group became 5 as we landed at Lake Ferry and grabbed a table outside sheltered from the southerly, and enjoyed a cuppa, some hot chups and an overdue catchup.

We managed to squeak in a good ride today. A dozen of us set out to Tinui for lunch, starting at Z Rimutaka in Upper Hutt. A mix of IAM and BMW club riders taking advantage of the perfect riding weather. Sunny and warm with just the right amount of breeze to keep the ride comfortable. As we cruised over the Rimutakas, turned right at Featherston and through Martinborough, Longbush, and a jink out through Wainuioru, we weren't alone. The roads were alive with many other groups of riders, all out enjoying the same perfect conditions. Ulysses doing a toy run, a swarm of trail bikes heading for the hills. It seemed like every corner we turned, another bike or a convoy of cruisers was rolling by.

Martinborough was our first stop, and it was buzzing. The town square was filled with motorcycles, classic cars, cyclists, dogs chilling at the feet of owners at the tables outside cafes, and locals making the most of the sunny day. We pulled into a café for a quick coffee and a scone. The vibe was contagious, with the hum of engines, and the chatter of people out enjoying the day. After soaking up the energy, it was back on the bikes for the run to Tinui. The ride out was smooth, though there were a few stretches of roadworks, and dust clouds were quickly cleared by some strong breezes.

When we arrived in Tinui, the friendly service and food didn't disappoint. Fresh fish, juicy smash burgers, and ice-cold cokes made for the perfect reward after a great ride.

After lunch, most of the group decided to head home at their leisure, content with the day's ride and the good food from Tinui cafe and bar. But a handful of the more adventurous riders weren't ready to chuck in the towel. They set off towards Castlepoint, eager for a bit more adventure. Their route took them up the Pack Spur Road loop, a winding gravel track with a couple of stream crossings, and from there, they looped back south and turned off to ride one of the little known forest tracks before heading back to town and calling it a day.

Thanks everyone for making it an enjoyable day out.

Today, a dozen of us finally hit the road for a social motorcycle outing under thankfully sunny skies.

Starting out after a coffee at McDonalds in Silverstream, some IAM and BMWOR riders combined forces and we headed over the Haywards, ducked along the edge of Porirua harbour and turned off at Porirua. Through Kenepuru and Tawa, heading to Johsnonville, the weather had obviously attracted a lot of other like minded people who were also out and about , so while it was kind of slow, it did give us more time to practice our urban riding skills as well as a chance to take in some scenery.

After a slight delay due to the group getting separated in Johnsonville, we all made our way to Karori via the Ohariu valley and Makara roads. Lots of cyclists and other groups of motorcycles meant the ride was pretty sedate, but that isn't a bad thing.

Finally ending up at the Picnic cafe at the Lady Norwood rose gardens, we were well taken care of by staff there and enjoyed some great coffee and food. I did briefly consider giving up motorcycle riding and becoming a barista, but I quickly came to my senses.

Not quite ready to call it a day, a bunch of us then headed off for some slow-speed riding drills around some tennis ball "cones" in a car park in the Hutt. There were no trophies, but plenty of laughs, a few wobbles, and some new learnings.

All in all, a great day on two wheels!

Good morning folks,
Well, I guess it is spring :)

With motorcycle rider safety top of mind, todays outing has been cancelled due to large amounts of wet stuff falling out of the sky.

Hope to see you all soon.

Apologies folks,
Looks like Mother Nature has decided to rain on our parade - literally.

With widespread rain, wet roads and slick conditions expected, we're pressing pause on our social excursion to Tinui to keep everyone safe.

Stay cozy, grab another cuppa, and we'll see you on drier, grippier roads soon!
