The Wai Māori Scholarship closes at Midday on Monday 22 September!

This scholarship was established in 2022 to support Māori in the pursuit of freshwater or freshwater fisheries related research or study.

Enrolled in tertiary study and interested in…
• Indigenous freshwater species research,
• Effects of climate change on indigenous freshwater species
• Kaupapa Māori freshwater research,
• Māori rights and interests in freshwater,
• Freshwater and/or freshwater fisheries/species management and protection
• Freshwater and/or freshwater fisheries/species policy, regulation, and development and;
• Building or strengthening connections of tauira to their iwi/hapū.

The Applications close for the Wai Māori Scholarship at midday on Monday 22nd September, so we thought we’d share a bit about Phoenix Hale.

Phoenix is undertaking a Masters (Research) in Ecology and Biodiversity at the University of Waikato, focussing on gambusia – a species of pest fish.

Our Wai Māori Scholarship is open for applications, so we thought we’d share a bit about some of our past recipients and their awesome mahi.

First up we have Lucy Coulston. Lucy is currently undertaking research at the University of Canterbury, exploring tino rangatiratanga in highly modified systems through a comparative case study of Waituna and Waitarakao lagoons.

Are you studying kaupapa related to Wai Māori me ōna taonga? Applications are now open for the 2025 Wai Māori Scholarship.

This scholarship was established in 2022 to strengthen the presence of Māori experts in freshwater and freshwater fisheries related fields of academic study and professional fields.

A total fund of $40,000 has been made available for this scholarship, this may be awarded to a single recipient or split between a number of recipients.

Applications for the Wai Ora Fund 2025 close TODAY!

Submit your application online using our online portal by
5pm today.

Late entries will not be considered so get them in now.

We look forward to receiving your application, learning about your project and how it supports wai Māori me ōna taonga.

The Wai Ora Fund has a total pool of $250,000 available to applicants.

Apply for up to $50,000 towards a project for iwi, hapū, and whānau working towards their freshwater fisheries aspirations for:

🌊 wānanga to share traditional fishing knowledge,
🌊 research to better understand the health of local indigenous fisheries,
🌊 work to safeguard our taonga freshwater species and their kainga.

Launched in 2012, the Wai Ora Fund has now provided over $2.5 million to more than 70 projects around Aotearoa.
