Wellington City Council is deeply saddened to acknowledge the passing of Tony Randle - WCC Councillor Takapū/Northern.
Cr Randle was first elected to Wellington City Council in 2022 and was re-elected in 2025. He was widely known for his strong interest in transport and his detailed approach to public policy.
Cr Randle’s contribution to Council was marked by diligence, care and a commitment to understanding the detail.
Tony was deeply committed to public service and wanted the best for Wellington and its communities. He was always cordial and constructive, but he also brought a healthy scepticism to every issue.
He believed an important part of his role was to challenge, question, and test assumptions to ensure decisions were based on solid evidence.
What really set him apart was his focus on substance over rhetoric. He wanted to understand the facts, examine the evidence, and make the best possible decision based on all available information.
He was never willing to be rushed and valued thorough analysis and quality decision-making above all else. He applied his analytical skills to public transport in particular and was always willing to engage with the public on detailed and principles grounds.
Chief Executive Matt Prosser says Cr Randle’s contribution reflected both his commitment to Wellington and his careful approach to Council work.
“Tony was deeply committed to better outcomes for the Wellington region and was widely recognised for both the care and attention to detail he brought to his work. These qualities helped define both his contribution as a councillor and his approach to public service. His love of a spreadsheet and its detailed analysis will be missed around the council and council table.
“He was also a strong and passionate advocate for his local community, engaging thoughtfully with residents and participating in public discussions on issues that mattered to Wellington.
“His commitment to representing community interests was evident throughout his time in public office.”
The Mayor, Chief Executive, Councillors and Council staff extend their sincere condolences to Cr Randle’s family, friends, colleagues and the Takapū/Northern Ward communities he served.
Council will provide further information about arrangements to acknowledge Cr Randle’s service in due course.
Cr Randle was first elected to Wellington City Council in 2022 and was re-elected in 2025. He represented the Takapū/Northern Ward, including communities across Wellington’s northern suburbs, and served on a range of Council committees and subcommittees.
During the 2025–2028 triennium, Cr Randle served as Deputy Chair of the CCO Review and Appointments Subcommittee and Deputy Chair of Te Takere | Regulatory Processes Committee, and was a member of Te Kura o te Waka | Audit and Risk Committee.
He was also appointed to the Wellington Regional Transport Committee.
Before being voted onto Council, Cr Randle was the president of the Johnsonville Community Association 2020-2022.
