Such an important piece of research. Hats off to The New Zealand Coalition to End Homelessness for bringing these statistics to light.
Ever considered how children might be impacted by homelessness? Giant shout out to our Chair Jo Cribb who did. Jo has led the research by the Coalition to End Women's Homelessness which shows a whopping 33,000 children and young people in Aotearoa are homeless.
When children experience homelessness, the impacts are felt across every part of their lives. Yet homelessness is preventable.
The research highlights the need for:
✔ Tiriti-based gender analysis in homelessness policy and service design
✔ Better collection and reporting of gender and ethnicity-disaggregated housing data
✔ Housing solutions designed around the needs of women and children
✔ Greater protection of housing stability for families
When we create housing systems that work for mothers, we often improve outcomes for their children too.
