DCM Wellington

DCM Wellington Since 1969, DCM has been a lifeline for those experiencing or at risk of homelessness and harm in Wellington, offering advocacy, care, and wraparound support.

DCM (Downtown Community Ministry) has been working in the city of Wellington since 1969 to “focus on the needs of, and to help empower, those marginalised in the city” (DCM Constitution). We believe that those who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless as a result of economic and social changes have the right to have their worth and dignity upheld. We have adopted the byline “together we can

end homelessness” which reflects our current focus on the needs of one key marginalised group – people experiencing homelessness, or who are at risk of homelessness. Sitting in the heart of Wellington at 2 Lukes Lane on the site of Te Aro Pā, the most marginalised people in our city come to us because they genuinely feel welcome and because what we do works and makes a difference in their lives. Follow us to keep up to date about how you too can help end homelessness. Visit our website to read a wide range of success stories and to find other ways you can support us.

Such an important piece of research. Hats off to The New Zealand Coalition to End Homelessness for bringing these statistics to light.

Ever considered how children might be impacted by homelessness? Giant shout out to our Chair Jo Cribb who did. Jo has led the research by the Coalition to End Women's Homelessness which shows a whopping 33,000 children and young people in Aotearoa are homeless.

When children experience homelessness, the impacts are felt across every part of their lives. Yet homelessness is preventable.

The research highlights the need for:

✔ Tiriti-based gender analysis in homelessness policy and service design

✔ Better collection and reporting of gender and ethnicity-disaggregated housing data

✔ Housing solutions designed around the needs of women and children

✔ Greater protection of housing stability for families

When we create housing systems that work for mothers, we often improve outcomes for their children too.

Haere mai team, now is the moment to have your say on the Move-On Orders.

Public Submissions to the Select Committee close on July 2nd- so you have just under a month to submit!!

None of us want to see people living on our streets, but we don't want to just move these people on... We want to move them in to stable housing, community, and wrap around support.

We've put together a plain-language guide to help you craft your submission, please share it widely: https://dcm.org.nz/move-on-orders-submission-guide

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our Foodbank collection this weekend to donate kai and other essential items for our whānau who are rough sleeping or at risk of homelessness.

With the help of our wonderful volunteers and the Wellington community, we collected 75 boxes of our most needed items. Every item will provide much needed support to our community, providing a key part of the wrap around support that helps people into more stable housing. More than that – every item shows our whānau that our community cares.

Thank you, Wellington. We are so grateful to you!

Some of our wonderful volunteers at New World Newtown! Thank you for supporting our neighbours.

Today is DCM’s Foodbank Collection at New Worlds Newtown and Wellington City.

A huge thank you to everyone who has already made a generous donation to support people rough sleeping or at risk of homelessness in our community. We are so lucky to have your support.

If you’re heading to do your shop today, please consider donating an item or two. If you can’t make it, tell a friend or neighbour about our collection today!

Today we’re supporting the amazing work of DCM Wellington with their food bank drive today at New World Newtown ❤️

We’ve kicked things off with some groceries to help stock the shelves for people doing it tough this winter. Every can, packet, and dollar makes a difference.

If you’re heading past today, please consider grabbing an extra item or two to donate. Together, our community can make a real impact. 🛒🥫

Add a can or two (with a pull tab) into your shopping basket tomorrow, May 23rd.

Our Annual Foodbank drive is critical to allowing us to provide kai support for our rough sleeping and recently housed communities.

Please say a big hello to our lovely volunteers at New World Newtown and New World Wellington City.

Big thank you to you, our volunteers, and New World for supporting our kaupapa!!
