Forty One South Crew

Forty One South Crew Wellington based Freediving team, who are as much about giving back as about taking.

Forty One South Crew is proud to be a major support crew to Ghost Fishing NZ.

‘Ghost Fishing’ is what fishing gear does when it has been lost, dumped or abandoned. Imagine a fishing net that gets snagged on a reef or a wreck and gets detached from the fishing vessel. Nets, long lines, fish traps or any man made contraptions designed to catch fish or marine organisms are considered capable of ghos

t fishing when unattended, and without anyone profiting from the catches, they are affecting already depleted commercial fish stocks. Caught fish die and in turn attract scavengers which will get caught in that same net, thus creating a vicious circle. Entangled Sea Star

The issue of “ghost fishing” was first brought to the attention of world at the 16th Session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries in April 1985. Following debate at COFI, the FAO Secretariat published an in-depth study of the problem. Lost fishing gear, or so called ‘ghost gear’ are among the greatest killers in our oceans, and not only because of their numbers. Literally hundreds of kilometers of nets and lines get lost every year and due to the nature of the materials used to produce these types of gear, they can and will keep fishing for multiple decades, possibly even for several centuries.

Great write up that virtually sums up the mental shift that happened for me, and helped make the decision to align with Ghost Diving NZ and protect what we love...

The ocean provides for us and in return, we give back to the ocean all of our unwanted waste, garbage, chemical sludge, sewage discharge, and fertilizer runoff as though it is an endless repository.

Horrific!!!! This is just heartbreaking...

The confiscation of the Chinese ship and arrest of its 20 crew in the Galápagos show just how hard it is to protect marine sanctuaries.

Unbelievable turnout yesterday for the Ghost Fishing NZ / Vector AMS / PAK'nSAVE / Sea Shepherd New Zealand Petone Beach Clean Up. Over 300 volunteers joined the fight against rubbish, removing 5 cubic metres of trash in two hours! The sun came out, and gave us a perfect winter's day, thanks so much to everybody who made this event so great! And as always, our loyal supporters and sponsors:

Huge honour to be alongside Ghost Fishing NZ tonight to receive the Runner-Up award in the Heritage & Environment category of the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards. There are so many people to thank for this incredible recognition. Forty One South Crew wouldn't be here without the amazing support of OCEAN HUNTER Spearfishing & Freediving Specialists, who supply the team with all their wetsuit and gear requirements. Also, Concept Sign & Display, for all of the dive day signage and ongoing support. Thanks for backing us, we hope this is a little recognition for your generous support.

This is disgusting - truly disgusting. Photographed by Kristine Zipfel Photography at Owhiro Bay boatramp, hundreds of empty and VERY undersized paua shells, a definite affirmation of poaching. It's heartbreaking to see this anywhere, let alone on the beach inside a marine reserve. Remember, if you ever see suspicious activity give MPI Fisheries a call on 0800-4POACHER (0800 476224).
