It has now been a week since the AdmiNZ Wellington Group APD Breakfast, so why the delay in sharing the update. In true Wellington style, on Wednesday 22 April we were met with wind, rain, flooding 💨☔and a collective feeling of OMG who thought travelling today was a good idea!! 🤭 The event was therefore postponed to Wednesday 29 April at The Thistle, and thankfully the only downfall that day was people overindulging at breakfast, as The Thistle laid on a very grand spread.

Our wonderful sponsor H2R Consulting (Katerina Makarios) ensured we were thoroughly spoiled, including a lovely gift a mug with chocolates inside, because meetings are always better when chocolate is involved. H2R also shared a fantastic write up on LinkedIn ✍, we did not want to jump the gun and steal their moment in the spotlight!! 😄

It was a great event overall, while we were sorry for those who were unable to attend in the end, we extend a huge thank you to The Thistle, H2R Consulting, Scenic Hotels, Juliette Florist and CPG Hotels. We were exceptionally well looked after, and having our Board Chair (Angela Simms) in attendance was very much the icing on the cake, without needing any extra frosting 🍧

Our speaker, Gerard Hoffman 📣 , spoke on the topic of ‘hope when things look dark’. His presentation was both informative and engaging, the writer certainly walked away with new ideas on how to make the day feel easier, brighter and altogether more manageable, even when the inbox says otherwise 😊

Below is a selection of photos from the morning, along with the names of the prize draw recipient’s aka winners. A big thank you once again to our sponsors and to everyone who braved the early train, car or creative Wellington commute to be there. It was absolutely worth getting out of bed for 🚂🎠🚗👣

Continuing with our sponsor theme 💐

A constant and much-loved sponsor of the AdmiNZ Wellington Group, Juliette Florist is the kind of supporter who turns up with both commitment and beautiful flowers, which frankly sets the bar quite high. In a world where inboxes never sleep and meetings could absolutely have been an email; one hotel sponsor rises above the rest.

Introducing Scenic Hotel Group, the long-standing sponsor of the AdmiNZ Wellington Group and the quiet hero behind many very well-timed getaways. As New Zealand’s largest independently owned hotel company, Scenic Hotel Group delivers epic locations, legendary comfort and beds so good they make returning to work feel like a dramatic plot twist. From polished city stays to majestic regional escapes and even an island cameo in Niue, their hotels span the country with true Kiwi hospitality, thoughtful sustainability and an uncanny ability to make people forget what day it is.

Trusted, welcoming and always there when we need a great stay or an excellent excuse to extend the trip, Scenic Hotel Group is a sponsor we genuinely appreciate.

Twist ending. The real drama begins when you realise the hardest part of the experience is not checking in but checking out!! 😊 The alarm clock and a suspicious number of sick days the following Monday.

Proud Sponsor, H2R (aka the reason we’re all having breakfast)

A massive thank you to H2R, one of our main sponsors for the AdmiNZ Wellington Group. Put simply, without H2R, this breakfast would be a BYO coffee situation, and nobody wants that!! 😊 We’re genuinely grateful for their support of the admin and business support community.

H2R was established in 2004 by Eugene Ng and Jane Walker, who set out to create something refreshingly different: a recruitment business that is 100% locally owned, with 100% of profits staying in the local economy, and blissfully free of the politics and bureaucracy often found in global firms. Radical idea at the time… still working beautifully today.

Now employing over 50 people across Wellington and Auckland, H2R continues to be led by Directors Eugene Ng, Jane Walker and Tina Ng, alongside owners Paul Hodder and Katerina Makarios. Their Senior Leadership Team brings serious expertise across recruitment, organisational development, finance and operations and the notable achievement of staying in the same job long enough to know what’s going on.

One of H2R’s biggest points of difference is their serviceoversales focus. Their consultants aren’t rewarded for chasing shiny new leads; they’re measured on quality service and repeat business. Add to that one of the lowest staff turnover rates in the industry (with many team members there for 10, 15, even 18 years), and you get consultants who truly know your history. Yes, the “do you know who I am?” card doesn’t just work… it’s encouraged.

H2R is also a genuine onestop shop, offering everything from temporary roles through to senior executive recruitment, plus nationwide career and change support and psychometric assessments. They even have an IT recruitment arm, H2R Technology, because let’s face it someone needs to understand tech talent.
We’re proud to be supported by a business that values people, relationships, and the local community who helps make mornings like this possible.

In local news, the Great Walking Catch Up went ahead yesterday, Wednesday 25 March, albeit with a smaller than forecast turnout. Attendance was affected by illness, work commitments and other pressing matters, resulting in just two particularly committed walkers heading out. Among them was Amy Morris, making a notable appearance as a new member and immediately earning recognition for her bravery 😊

Weather conditions were reported as peak Wellington. Forecasts included a light breeze that felt personal, intermittent showers that arrived without invitation, and temperatures best described as misleading. Despite these conditions, officials confirmed that visibility remained acceptable and spirits were largely intact.

Organisers noted that while the walk itself proceeded as planned, the real success lay in the conversation and shared determination of those who turned up. In a development likely to concern regular attendees, there was no post walk ice cream observed. Early reports suggest this may be linked to the usual ice cream facilitator being otherwise occupied, though no formal statement has been issued!!

Despite the low numbers and the weather doing its best to discourage participation, the event has been declared a success, with expectations already building for sunnier skies, larger crowds and the possible return of frozen treats at the next outing.

We are delighted to thank The Thistle Inn (3 Mulgrave Street, Thornton, Wellington) as a valued sponsor of AdmiNZ and the host venue for our upcoming Administrators Professional Day Breakfast on Wednesday, 22 April 2026.

Situated in Thorndon, directly opposite Parliament, The Thistle Inn is widely recognised as New Zealand’s oldest hotel on its original site, established in 1840. With more than a century of stories embedded in its walls and one of the country’s earliest liquor licences to its name, it knows a thing or two about hosting robust conversation. While our breakfast start time may be earlier than some of its historic patrons once preferred, we are confident the discussion will be just as lively and the coffee strong enough to do the job.

The Inn’s colourful history includes Māori chief Te Rauparaha, who would beach his waka nearby and is remembered for the famous words from his haka, “Ka mate! Ka mate! Ka ora! Ka ora!” It is death, it is life. A sentiment that feels especially relevant before the first coffee of the morning, and a powerful reminder that by the time breakfast is served, ka ora will most certainly prevail.

With its warm hospitality, heritage charm and reputation for excellent food and drink showcasing local produce, The Thistle Inn provides the ideal setting to start the day. We sincerely thank them for their generous support of AdmiNZ and for hosting our APD Breakfast in a venue where history, humour and honest conversation have gone hand in hand for generations.
