KiVa Bullying Prevention Aotearoa

KiVa Bullying Prevention Aotearoa KiVa is an evidence-based bullying prevention approach offered in New Zealand schools and kura.

KiVa is an innovative school-based bullying prevention programme which has been developed using world-leading research on bullying and its mechanisms. Prevention, intervention, and monitoring

KiVa is an evidence-based programme designed to prevent bullying and to tackle the cases of bullying effectively. Prevention and intervention are both crucial, as no prevention efforts will make bullying di

sappear once and for all. Schools need tools to be utilised when a case of bullying comes to light. The third aspect of KiVa is monitoring of the situation in one’s school and the changes taking place over time. Annual feedback for each school about their implementation and outcomes obtained from KiVa is gained through a student survey. The main components of KiVa

KiVa includes both universal and indicated actions. The universal actions, such as the KiVa curriculum (student lessons and online games), are directed at all students and focus mainly on preventing bullying. There are direct links to the New Zealand Curriculuum (NZC) Essential Learning Areas and the Key Competencies. The indicated actions are to be used when a bullying case has emerged. They are targeted specifically to the children and adolescents who have been involved in bullying as perpetrators or victims, as well as to several classmates who are encouraged to support the victim; the aim is to put an end to bullying. KiVa is based on decades of research on bullying and its mechanisms

KiVa was developed at the University of Turku in Finland, with funding from the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. Its developers are experts who have been studying the phenomenon of bullying and its mechanisms for decades. The team is led by PhD, Professor Christina Salmivalli and PhD, Special Researcher Elisa Poskiparta.

This week is Schools' Pride Week, and we are celebrating every student’s right to feel safe, accepted, and valued for who they are.

Creating inclusive school communities isn't just about preventing bullying, it's about building a culture where diversity is respected, kindness is the norm, and every young person knows they belong.

At The Elephant Trust, we believe all tamariki and rangatahi deserve to learn in kura where they can be themselves without fear of exclusion or discrimination.

To all the fabulous schools, educators, students, whānau, and allies marking Schools' Pride Week across Aotearoa, thank you for helping create safer, more inclusive communities for everyone.

Because when everyone belongs, everyone thrives!
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🩷

In Aotearoa, too many young people still experience bullying at school.

Whether you're a parent, teacher, school leader, or student yourself, you'll know the impact bullying can have on a child's confidence, wellbeing, and ability to learn.

But bullying is not something we have to accept as "just part of growing up."

KiVa is an evidence-based bullying prevention programme helping schools to create safer, more inclusive environments where all students can thrive. KiVa focuses on preventing bullying behaviours and building positive school cultures that last.

Mā tātou katoa e ārai te whakaweti.

At KiVa Aotearoa, we know bullying prevention starts with recognising emotions — in ourselves and in others. When students learn to name feelings, show empathy, and stand up for each other, school becomes a place where everyone feels safe to belong.

Because behind every face is a story.
And every story matters. 💛
