On Saturday, 28 March 2026, we welcomed a small and lovely group of 6 participants to our Bún Bò Xào Fresh Vietnamese Noodle Salad workshop at Te Tai Ohinga.

It was a relaxed and enjoyable session, with everyone getting involved from the start. People were slicing, mixing, cooking, and tasting together, creating a warm and collaborative atmosphere in the kitchen.

The highlight for many was the combination of flavours. The savoury stir fried beef paired with fresh herbs and crisp vegetables made the dish both light and satisfying, and everyone really enjoyed the final bowl they created.

As we cooked and shared the meal, conversations flowed naturally. Some participants shared stories of their travels to Vietnam and their love for Vietnamese food, which added another layer of connection to the experience.

It was wonderful to see how engaged everyone was, and many shared that they are looking forward to joining more Viet Hub NZ workshops in the future.

A small group, but a morning full of connection, good food, and shared stories.

Our cooking workshops began with a simple idea. Food has a way of bringing people together.

Over the past year, Yung has been part of this journey with us. With her dedication and love for Vietnamese cooking, she has generously shared her knowledge, stories, and recipes with the community. For her, cooking is not just about preparing a dish. It is about sharing culture, care, and connection.

This year, through our collaboration, we wanted to take it a little further. Our workshops are not only about learning how to cook Vietnamese food. Whenever possible, we use donations and seasonal ingredients to prepare community meals that can be shared with people who need a warm dish.

It is a small way of giving back, using something we all love doing. Cooking together, sharing food, and extending that kindness to the wider community.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our workshops, joined our classes, or contributed in their own way. Your support helps us continue this journey.

We hope that through these kitchens, we can keep sharing culture, building connection, and bringing more warm meals to people who need them.

This morning the kitchen at | Youth Hub was filled with laughter, curiosity, and the fresh aroma of herbs.

Together we prepared Vietnamese Shrimp and Pork Fresh Salad (Gỏi Tôm Thịt). Everyone rolled up their sleeves and joined in. Some were slicing vegetables, others mixing the dressing, tasting the herbs, and carefully plating the salad. What began as a simple cooking session quickly turned into a shared moment of learning and connection.

One of the highlights was introducing rau răm, Vietnamese mint. Many participants noticed the flavour was quite different from the mint commonly found here. A few curious gardeners even asked to take small cuttings home so they could try growing it themselves.

Food has a quiet way of bringing people together. Through cooking we share culture, learn new skills, and create small moments of belonging around the table.

We are deeply grateful to the organisations who help make these workshops possible, and to the passion and dedication of Trang Huynh and Chelsea Huynh, whose energy and care helped bring this workshop to life.

Their love for sharing food, culture, and knowledge is what makes these moments around the kitchen table so special.

As we close “Những Miền Đất Nhớ | Lands We Remember,” Viet Hub NZ would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who made this journey possible.

What was initially planned as a two week exhibition became something far more meaningful. With the tremendous encouragement and endorsement from Te Whare Manaaki o Toda, the team generously offered to extend the exhibition. That gesture reflected shared belief, trust, and the strength of collective effort.

This exhibition was created to honour memory, belonging, and connection. It offered a space where Vietnamese stories could stand proudly within Aotearoa’s cultural landscape. Seeing visitors pause in front of a painting, lean closer, ask questions, and begin conversations across cultures reminded us why this mahi matters.

One moment that stayed with us was when an art teacher visited the exhibition. He spent time with the works, quietly observing each piece. Afterwards, he shared that he was in awe of the paintings and said they carry strong character and depth. He encouraged us to bring the exhibition to Napier, saying these works deserve to be seen by more communities. That conversation reminded us that art travels beyond language and beyond place.

We are sincerely grateful to our volunteers, distinguished guests, the artist Đặng Mậu Tựu, partners, families, and every visitor who walked through the doors. Your presence and encouragement carried this kaupapa further than we imagined.

While this chapter closes, the journey continues. Viet Hub NZ is now seeking new hosts across Aotearoa who would be open to supporting this mahi and helping us share these stories more widely. If you know of a gallery, community venue, council space, or organisation interested in collaborating, we warmly invite you to connect with us.

This experience has shown us what becomes possible when community, culture, and collaboration come together.
