Happy National Volunteer Week! To round off this special week we're highlighting the incredible volunteers who bring care, calm and connection to some of the busiest and most high-pressure areas of our hospitals.

In the Emergency Departments at Wellington Regional Hospital and Hutt Hospital, over 100 volunteers play an essential role in supporting patients and whānau during moments that can be stressful, frightening, and often unexpected.

With over 114,000 patients cared for last year alone, even the smallest gesture of kindness can make a meaningful difference. A warm drink, a blanket, or a few minutes of conversation can help ease anxiety and bring comfort when it is needed most.

For many volunteers, the role is deeply personal and offers purpose, perspective, and connection in return, read their thoughts here: https://whf.org.nz/news/volunteer-teams-making-ed-easier-all

A huge thank you to all our volunteers, and those who have helped celebrate them this week 💛

Meet Gay and Lola 🐾

Lola is a 5 ½ year old Shih Tzu cross bringing cuddles and calm to patients and staff across the hospital alongside her owner, Gay, who volunteers her time to share Lola’s unconditional love with those who need it most.

Gay was inspired to volunteer after seeing how much joy Lola naturally brings to people and wanted to share that gift with those going through difficult times in hospital.

Together, they visit patients where Lola’s gentle presence often offers a brief but meaningful distraction.

“The smiles and loving eyes I see when Lola is looking at patients show that, for a short time, they’ve forgotten their worries and are simply enjoying her sweetness and innocence” Gay recalls.

Volunteering has also been deeply rewarding for her, as meeting patients in vulnerable moments and hearing their stories is a privilege that has enriched her perspective and deepened her appreciation for life.

“It’s a gift to be trusted in this way” she shares.

Thank you, Gay and Lola for your dedication as volunteers and the comfort you bring to our hospital community.

Across Wellington, Hutt and Kenepuru Hospitals, our amazing volunteers have been busy preparing your donated pyjamas for distribution to children in hospital this winter.

A huge thank you to every volunteer helping make Jammies for June possible, it’s just one of the many ways our volunteers generously give their time to support our hospital community.

This National Volunteers Week, we’re celebrating the incredible volunteers who bring care, creativity and compassion to our hospital community. 💛

Meet Susan, a member of the Wellington Embroiderers Guild, who lovingly handcrafts felt teddies for families experiencing the loss of a baby.

Each teddy is included in care packs as a tangible keepsake, offering comfort and connection during an incredibly difficult time.

From first learning embroidery at age eight to now creating her signature bullion knot flowers, Susan’s story is one of care, skill and dedication her stitching even travels with her wherever she goes. 🧸

Today we celebrate the incredible generosity of our community, who have contributed $500K towards a new Neonatal Transport Incubator that will save the lives of precious premature and critically ill newborns.

When a baby's life is at risk, every second counts. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Wellington Regional Hospital provides a critical service for New Zealand’s central region, and this new incubator will play a key role in safely transporting around 500 vulnerable babies to Wellington each year, ensuring they and their whānau can access specialist care when it matters most.

This project is a strong example of our partnership with Health NZ – Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley and has been made possible thanks to the thousands of people in our community who support the Foundation through one-off and regular donations, alongside generous grant funding from Pub Charity Limited, New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) and The Lion Foundation.

To everyone who has helped make this possible – thank you for helping give some of our smallest patients the best possible start in life.

$12,000 raised for our hospitals! ⛳

To have businesses in our community go above and beyond to support healthcare in our region is a really special thing.

For nearly a decade, Matt and the team at Capital City Motors have proudly supported our work at the Foundation. This includes gifting the use of two branded vehicles each year, as well as ongoing fundraising support through initiatives such as their annual Charity Golf Day.

A huge thank you to Capital City Motors for their incredible support, with this year’s Charity Golf Day raising an outstanding $12,000 for the Foundation.

Partnerships like this help connect the incredible generosity of our community to the needs of our hospitals across the region. Together, we help fund life-saving equipment, training, innovation, and important projects that make a real difference for thousands of patients and whānau. 💛

To the CCapital City Fordteam and everyone who took part, donated, and supported this year's Charity Golf Day, thank you!

We're so excited to be apart of this wonderful year-round collaboration!

It's officially June and Jammies for June is in full swing!

We love seeing everyone pulling on their pyjamas, rallying their colleagues and communities, and even getting their four-legged friends involved.🐾

Shoutout to the Kapiti Community Ora team from the Kapiti Health Centre for their incredible fundraising efforts and the gorgeous greyhounds Biscuit and Brooke who look extra cosy in their jammies.

Whether fundraising for physical pyjamas or virtual ones online, you're helping sick tamariki in our hospitals get the warm winter essentials they need. Thank you Kapiti Community Ora, Biscuit and Brooke for all your efforts so far!🤗
