A warm thanks to those involved in organising and participating in the latter selection of events offered by the WWEA last year (from readings on Palestine to seminars on early socialist settlers). We are working to build on our work from last year, let us know if you have any ideas or projects you want to work on!

Public Meeting from the Wellington Residents Coalition on Water and Assets sales at Newtown Hall on Sunday 28th January at 2:00PM. Excerpt from the Wellington Residents Coalition pamphlet:

"Will you have to pay yet another bill?

At a time when we are facing increasing living costs, we may have to start paying another bill for the amount of water we use. The government intends to give ownership of our water supply assets to Wellington Water. They have made continual demands for water meters so that they can charge for water use by volume.

Despite public opposition, many local body politicians support them, from Daran Ponter Wellington Regional Council chair, to Nicola Young, longstanding city councillor. The Council endorses volumetric charging for water on its website. It has refused to entertain a petition opposing that prior to the last election.

Airport shares and ground leases – should they be for sale?

The Council has also voted to consult on selling its 34% shareholding in Wellington Airport and its ground leases.

What do you think of these proposals? What can we all do about them?

Public Meeting (followed by the Annual General of Wellington Residents Coalition)".

Wellington WEA

The Wellington WEA has been operating since 1915, and is the oldest adult education provider in the region. Founded in the UK in 1903, the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) is an international movement, providing accessible education for working people through allied organisations in 65 countries worldwide. We are a part of the Federation of WEAs in New Zealand.

The principle aim of the Wellington WEA is the advancement, encouragement and provision of continuing and community education for adults that promotes a just and more equitable society and which takes account of the Treaty of Waitangi as the founding document of Aotearoa New Zealand.
